There’s still one more competitive day left in the Group Stage of WePlay AniMajor but PSG.LGD has already gathered enough points to advance to the Playoffs. They will take their place in the Upper Bracket, where the 6 Upper Bracket seeds await them. Now we have to see who else will join them there and who the other 4 qualified teams will be. These 4 teams will start in the Lower Bracket, but it’s still better than getting eliminated.

WePlay AniMajor Group Stage Results

So far, the Major has gone pretty much as planned. The only real disappointment is Team Liquid. After they finished 2nd in Western Europe’s Upper Division, I would have hoped to see them in the top 4 here. But unfortunately they’re struggling to survive the Group Stage and will need to win a game against EG to do that. Right now they’re on par with Team Spirit. But Spirit’s last match will be against TNC, while Liquid’s will be against a much stronger opponent.

The teams that dominated the first 3 competitive days are PSG.LGD, Nigma, and Vici Gaming. EG and TNC are right behind VG but will most likely miss the Upper Bracket. Hopefully for European fans, Nigma will finish 2nd and then do well enough in the Playoffs to get a direct invite to The International 10. That would allow OG to almost certainly qualify as well to the tournament. Because their regional rivals are very few. Apart from Brame and Tundra, nobody can contest them.

Of the 8 teams that compete in the Group Stage of AniMajor, only PSG.LGD is still undefeated. Everyone else lost at least one match. And, as usual, most of the matches ended in a draw.

Results So Far

The complete list of results is the following:

  • 1st place: PSG.LGD: 4 W – 2 D – 0 L
  • 2nd place: Team Nigma: 3 W – 2 D – 1 L
  • 3rd place: Vici Gaming: 2 W – 3 D – 1 L
  • 4th place: Evil Geniuses: 1 W – 4 D – 1 L
  • 5th place: TNC Predator: 2 W – 2 D – 2 L
  • 6th place: Team Liquid: 1 W – 2 D – 3 L
  • 7th place: Team Spirit: 0 W – 4 D – 2 L
  • 8th place: beastcoast: 0 W – 3 D – 3 L

As you can see, everyone has one more match to play. And a lot can still be decided. I suspect that we will also have tiebreakers, because the teams near the top of the rankings table and the ones near the bottom are very close to each other. Keep in mind that a win equals 2 points while a draw equals 1 point.

Predictions for Day 4

The 4th day of WePlay AniMajor’s Group Stage features the following 4 matches:

PSG.LGD versus Vici Gaming

Given the fact that these two teams regularly face each other regionally and are of similar strength, the most likely result for this match is a draw.

Team Spirit versus TNC

This is another match that’s likely to end in a draw. TNC may be stronger than Spirit but the skill difference is not big enough to ensure a high chance of victory in a Bo2 match. A Bo3 one would have been different. But in this competitive format, there’s little chance that we’ll see a one-sided result.

Nigma versus beastcoast

Nigma should absolutely defeat beastcoast in this match. But they might not win it because they only need to win one game to secure a spot in the Upper Bracket. This is the reason why I partly expect a draw here as well.

Liquid versus Evil Geniuses

Unless EG makes some big blunders during the drafting stage, it’s going to be difficult for them to miss the victory in this match. However, given the fact that they already have 4 draws and just 1 win, there’s a high chance that they’ll draw again.
