Old G’s Div I dreams get crushed by Ancient Tribe

It seems that we might have celebrated too early. Before the start of Tour 2, Old G looked perfectly capable of winning Division II of Western Europe. Their roster is full of superstars. But the more they play, the more predictable they become for their opponents. And Western Europe does have a lot of strong teams.

Old G started Tour 2 with a win against Into The Breach and for a while, things looked easy.

But in their second match, Sebastien “Ceb” Debs’ team encountered D2 Hustlers and got beaten in the worst way possible. They won game 1 and then lost the second and third. When that happens, it always hurts a lot more.

The third match

Old G’s third Division II match was against Ancient Tribe. Judging by the name, this match should have been a walk in the park for Ceb. At this point, Ancient Tribe don’t even have a Liquipedia page. That’s how obscure they are. However, some of the players, such as Nikola “LeBronDota” Popovic, have been around for many years.

At the age of 32, it’s quite surprising that LeBronDota continues to compete. His experience helped Ancient Tribe enormously in this match, which clearly showed that Old G’s roster isn’t working as well as we believed.

At the highest competitive level, Dota 2 is a game of strategy. Individual prowess is important, but it’s of little use if the overall strategy does not function. In Old G’s case, the strategy against Ancient Tribe wasn’t terrible but it was obviously flawed, especially in game 1.

The two teams were evenly matched in this game until the 19-minute mark, when a big team fight gave Ancient a huge lead of around 3500 gold. After that, there was nothing that Old G could do with their heroes. Ancient Tribe simply had too much damage and too much effective HP.

Heroes like Slark, Viper, and Dragon Knight are very difficult to play against. And when your primary source of damage is Leshrac, the fight will not end well after a certain point. Black King Bars ruin this hero.

Game 2 looked much tougher but once again, after around 20 minutes of equality, Ancient Tribe managed to find a good fight and won the game off the back of it. Their Dragon Knight pick was very inspired against Old G’s heroes.
