NetEase officially reveals “Operation Apocalypse” mobile tac shooter

After nearly a year when its first foray for mobile tac shooters ended due to a copyright controversy, NetEase Games is trying its hand once more in launching games of the said genre.

Operation Apocalypse, a 5v5 tac shooter for mobile, has officially been announced March 14th, through the launch of its various social media channels.

The said game is currently available in Chinese, and the full extent of skills, heroes, and other elements are yet to be revealed. However, the trailer for the game reveals some similarities to other games in the genre, such as hero abilities. The game also has various weapons to use, such as sniper rifles and silenced SMGs.

The game is also played with a simple objective, similar to VALORANT – a race to prevent attacking sides with what looks like a bomb from successfully plant the said objective.

This is NetEase’s second foray into the mobile tac shooter genre, as its previous mobile tac shooter game Hyper Front was surrounded with controversy.

Back in 2023, Hyper Front was shut down after VALORANT developer Riot Games filed a lawsuit against NetEase Games.

Riot alleged that Hyper Front copied various major elements of VALORANT, such as character design and the gameplay mechanisms (i.e. the Starcore in Hyper Front being similar to the Spike used in VALORANT). These lawsuits were filed in the United Kingdom, Germany, Brazil and Singapore.

Despite the initial hype, the lawsuits and social media reports of cheaters in the server, as well as the elements copied from VALORANT, affected the game’s popularity.

Meanwhile, VALORANT Mobile is still currently in development and more announcements about the highly-anticipated port of the worldwide hit shooter are yet to be revealed.
