Game developer studio Treyarch, which is behind all the Black Ops games and the Vanguard ranked system, has announced that ranked play is planned for Modern Warfare 2. And that’s not all, the developers have also given us a timetable!
A ranking system is important for any competitive FPS game because many players want to improve, climb the ranks, and play with the best of the best. However, what sounds logical was not always possible in the Call of Duty games, and certainly not from the beginning. But this time, the community’s wish will be granted and we can expect Ranked Mode to be introduced into Modern Warfare 2 early next year.

Ranked coming in 2023
With the desire for ranked games, speculation has been growing for some time, but Treyarch has confirmed that the mode will be released in 2023. Some say ranked mode will be introduced during the first CDL 2023 Major, scheduled to run between December 15 and 18. The schedule is probably similar to Black Ops Cold War and that would mean that we can expect Ranked Mode in February.
Moreover, Treyarch also plans to introduce a CDL moshpit playlist, which should arrive a little earlier — with Modern Warfare 2’s Season 1 update on November 16. These matches will be played according to the league rules, however, the rules for this are not yet known. When the playlist is released later this month, it should give us a first taste of the ranked plays and the rules.
The leaked ranks
Prior to the official announcement, Vanguard Intel posted on Twitter what ranks we can expect. While it’s an unconfirmed leak so caution should be taken, the leak shows six ranks that can allegedly be achieved in Modern Warfare 2. Starting with Bronze up to Iridescent these are probably the ranks:
- Bronze
- Silver
- Gold
- Platinum
- Diamond
- Crimson
- Iridescent
No clue where it goes on the list but there's also "Iridescent".

If leaker TheGhostOfHope is to be trusted, then the return of Vanguard’s Top 250 Player System also awaits us. It’s just a prestige thing, but then again everyone can see who the best and most promising players are. Especially for professionals, it can be a good stepping stone to attract teams looking for new talent.
But before ranked games are finally in the game, we can look forward to Warzone 2 and the start of the new CDL season, in which OpTic, FaZe and LA Thieves, among others, will compete against one another.
