LEC Summer has begun and we’ve already had the opportunity to watch the 10 participants play a few matches. So far, Fnatic, MAD Lions, and Team Heretics have demonstrated excellent skills and finished the first two competitive days with perfect records: 2 W – 0 L.

Four more teams, G2 Esports, KOI, Team BDS, and Team Vitality, had one win and one defeat at the end of day 2. Three teams, Astralis, Excel Esports, and SK Gaming, finished with two defeats.

It’s a bit painful to watch Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu struggling to win with a roster that simply does not function well together. Despite the serious roster changes that occurred at the end of May and the beginning of June, Excel Esports are simply not good enough to compete against most of the other teams in the league.

In LEC Winter 2023 and LEC Spring 2023 they finished 10th with abysmal records. It’s quite rare to see a team investing an enormous amount of money into a high-quality roster and then failing so spectacularly despite all that. Excel would have been better off not changing anything at the end of the last season.

Favorite teams

During the regular season of LEC Spring, BDS, Astralis, G2 Esports, and Team Vitality were the strongest competitors. But in the playoffs, MAD Lions ended up winning after beating G2, Vitality, and BDS. This was quite a shocking result relative to what had happened until that point.

But at MSI 2023, MAD Lions proved that their victory wasn’t a fluke. The string of good results continued even after MSI, where Lions finished 7th-8th. That’s why MAD Lions are probably the number-one favorite to win LEC Summer 2023.

Their biggest rival is Team Heretics, who have some of the most talented players in the region: Victor “Flakked” Lirola and Marcin “Jankos” Jankowski.

Another team that has the potential to perform well in this split is G2 Esports. G2 have always been among the strongest competitors in the region and their current roster is strong enough to dominate it once more. In LEC Winter they got 1st place, in LEC Spring they finished 4th, and at MSI they finished 5th-6th, a perfectly decent result.

G2 did lose one of their first two matches this split, but let’s keep in mind that they played against BDS and MAD Lions. To win against BDS is no small feat and the match against Lions lasted for 40 minutes.
