The popularity of esports, also known as competitive electronic gaming, has skyrocketed in recent years.

Despite the tremendous expansion of the sector, there is still a significant gender gap between competitors and professional players. But more and more women are establishing themselves in this world and proving they are just as talented and capable as men.

Importance of the inclusion of more women in esports

For several reasons, women must participate in esports. First, equal opportunities and inclusion depend heavily on gender diversity. In addition, women’s participation in esports can inspire other female athletes and demonstrate that esports is open to all athletes, regardless of gender.

On the other hand, women can also compete at a high level in esports tournaments and take home titles and prizes. Some of the excellent female gamers competing and succeeding in games such as StarCraft II, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and Halo include Sasha “Scarlett” Hostyn, Emmalee “EMUHLEET,” and Katherine “Mystik.”

The number of women in esports is increasing

Following a current survey released by the nonprofit group Women in Gaming:

“Nearly half of all gamers identify themselves as women, but only 16% of the executive teams of the 15 largest gaming companies in the world are made up of women. The number of women working in any position or competing in eSports is around 5% or one in twenty.”

However, we can say that diversity is increasing. For example, in 2009, women in the esports industry only made up 6%. But by 2020, the percentage had increased to 22%.

According to market research firm Statist:

“By 2022, 48% of gamers in the United States will identify as women, and that percentage is increasing. In 2021, there were 45% of women.”

“Compared to men, female gamers are likelier to use their mobile devices to play games.”

A long road ahead

For example, women are not allowed to compete in some tournaments. On the other hand, some tournaments do not pay the same prize money to male and female competitors. To ensure that all players have an equal chance of success, esports organizations must take steps to promote inclusion and gender equality.

Women’s participation in esports is crucial for inclusion and equal opportunity. Thus demonstrating that women have the same power as men in the industry. While there is still much work to be done to advance gender equality, we are excited about all that has been done. We now look forward to seeing how the role of women in eSports will develop and expand.
