Esports awards those who train well and a part of training well includes paying attention to your mental and physical health as well. Paying attention to health and work-life balance will certainly have a positive impact on performance.

Though Esports players have many benefits including polishing their problem-solving skills, communication, and leadership skills, they’re still prone to get burned out and it doesn’t get talked about much. Burnout stems from poorly managed stress and the stress comes from not being able to manage work-life balance. Professional esports players find it tough to maintain a work-life balance, which eventually causes bigger problems when it comes to their relationships with their close ones.

According to research, an average Esports player spends 8 hours each day practicing his game of choice over and over again. They practice solo as well as team play, running drills, and streaming. All of that isn’t easy and requires a lot of time and effort. Not to mention, it involves copious amounts of discipline as well. Now, if you’re the kind of player that finds it hard to be disciplined, chances are you’re going to end up ignoring your family’s needs. You won’t be able to take proper care of your physical and mental health.

In order to succeed at the competitive level, esports players tend to give all of their time and effort to their practice. Mia Stellberg, an esports psychologist and advisor to numerous top esports organizations including OG, SK Gaming, and ENCE, had a different take on the matter. Mia claims that improving as a player doesn’t include playing every game mindlessly in an effort to achieve the highest skill rating. According to Mia, your actions outside of the keyboard also have a significant impact on how well you play.

How esports players maintain work/life balance

There are a few crucial steps that professional players take to maintain a healthy work/life balance:

  • Goal setting is crucial for players, whether it’s winning MVP with a new build they learned or winning that trophy in their nation’s premier event.
  • Esports players take enough breaks that don’t let them burn out too often. They understand that taking a day off or two won’t hurt them.
  • Nutrition and health care are just as important to professional players as any in-game health or mana potions. They keep both their physical and mental health in check.
  • They make sure that they’re spending enough time with their friends and family.
  • They maintain a consistent sleep pattern which has a direct impact on their reaction time and memory.
