Elisa Masters Espoo 2023 started with unexpected results. Eventually, after struggling a lot more than they should have, ENCE survived day 1 and will get an opportunity to secure a spot in the playoffs tomorrow, in a best-of-three match against GamerLegion.

It seems that gla1ve’s new strategy has not yet been properly understood or developed by the roster. This was obvious in the first match against HAVU, who completely dismantled ENCE despite being ranked 127th. By contrast, ENCE is ranked 4th! The score of the match was 6 – 13.

What happened on day 1

The worst performance of group A was registered by Fnatic, who lost against GamerLegion (13 – 8) and then lost again against ENCE (2 – 1) despite winning the first map. This failure was to some extent expected given the fact that Fnatic changed most of the roster just days before the start of the tournament.

Usually, it can take months to integrate a single player into a roster. When three players are changed, you have to rebuild almost from scratch. At the amateur level, such a scenario doesn’t always lead to a failure because teams are less capable of exploiting their opponents’ lack of fluency and a monotonous set of tactics.

But at the highest competitive level, every tiny deficiency will be identified and exploited to perfection. That’s what happened to Fnatic. They showed their cards in the first match against GamerLegion, failed to win, and then got read like a book on two of the three maps against ENCE. The scores on those maps were 13 – 2 (Vertigo) and 13 – 5 (Overpass).

In the winners match, HAVU shocked the world for the second time in this tournament. They were underdogs against GamerLegion but ended up winning 2 – 1 after a match in which they lost on Overpass (5 – 13) but won on Ancient (13 – 10) and Nuke (13 – 10).

This second map victory was very spectacular thanks to the epic comeback. From 4 – 8 after the first half, HAVU won 9 rounds on the second.

Their best player against ENCE was ottoNd, who finished the match with a score of 16 – 5. In the second match, they got carried by Airax, who had 47 kills and 47 deaths. But because of how the frags were distributed, HAVU still won.

For ENCE, the carry in the match against Fnatic was Maden, who had 53 kills and just 29 deaths.
