Evil Geniuses have announced a partnership with Chevron, an energy company primarily involved in oil and gas. It’s no wonder there has been a violent reaction in the esports community.

Evil Geniuses esports organization has been around for a very long time, longer than most organizations in esports today. Since their inception in 1999, they’ve been involved in more and more esports titles and made a name for themselves.

Recently, there have been allegations against EG that they don’t treat their players well, and this new partnership, won’t necessarily do the org’s reputation any good.

However, recent events surrounding the Evil Geniuses have drawn the organization into controversy. The account of star ADC player Danny’s circumstances has sparked debate among League of Legends fans and beyond. Now the organization has delved even deeper with its new partnership with Chevron as its “Official Fuel Partner.”

It’s no secret that esports organizations have been sponsored by a variety of companies for years, many of which are in the automotive industry. In fact, all sorts of questionable companies and corporations want to get into the esports industry, but there should be, of course, certain moral standards.

For example, promoting unhealthy foods like pizza, cola, and chips does not reflect well on an organization. It is also not allowed in some tournaments to advertise certain sponsors, such as online gambling sites, tobacco and alcohol companies.

Advertising for cryptocurrency exchanges is also not welcomed. But aren’t all big corporations somehow bad and immoral? With some companies, you may just not know what evil machinations they are running behind our backs.

Fans don’t like that at all

For example, Team Liquid Honda and Dplus KIA both have automakers as title sponsors, and DRX is currently a partner with Porsche. Mercedes also has a long tradition as a sponsor of various teams and official esports broadcasts.

Evil Geniuses’ recent announcement of a partnership with Chevron as their official fuel partner caused a backlash in the esports community. Responses to Evil Geniuses’ original tweet are full of angry fans and articles criticizing Chevron, while retweets praise the organization for their partnership.

That being said, an energy company like Chevron isn’t that far removed from the auto industry, nor is it that far outside the realm of typical esports sponsorship. It remains to be seen whether the Evil Geniuses will reconsider the partnership with Chevron after the reactions of the community.
