DreamLeague S20 lasted for two weeks and featured 16 of the world’s best Dota 2 teams. Around 90 matches were played in total. Some of them were best-of-two, others were best-of-three. The Grand Final was best-of-five.

Another thing that’s important to note about this tournament is that it offered $1 million in prize money, as well as two direct invitations to Riyadh Masters 2023, which offers $15 million in prize money and is almost as important as The International.

The main downside of DreamLeague S20 when it comes to viewership is that it was held online from start to finish.

One of the main attractions of LAN events is the excitement produced by the massive crowd and the experience that gets created when two formidable teams face each other, the match is commented on by amazing casters, and the audience is emotionally invested in what is happening.

Without this powerful combination of elements, even a spectacular Grand Final that needs five games to conclude will not attract more than several hundred thousand viewers.

DreamLeague S20 viewership stats

According to Esports Charts, the key viewership numbers of DreamLeague S20 were almost identical to those of DreamLeague S19.

The number of average viewers was 128.000, which is not bad for a game that’s played by around eight million people. But it’s not great either. A participation of at least 5% of the total player base would have been much better and would have indicated that Dota 2 continues to be an exciting esport to watch.

This is, or at least used to be, one of the main qualities of Dota 2: it’s fun not only to play but also to watch.

The number of peak viewers was substantially higher: 276.000. Needless to say, the peak was reached during the Grand Final between Gaimin Gladiators and BetBoom Team. The two competitors went head to head in a very exciting match that ended up getting won by Gladiators with a score of 3-2.

Many people probably hoped that they would win, just because they’ve been the team of the season so far. They won both DPC Majors and look destined to win The International 12 as well.

DreamLeague S20 was watched for a total of 20.8 million hours. Its air time was 162 hours. These numbers don’t differ that much from those of the previous edition of the tournament, which shows us that the same people are watching every time.
