Dota 2 is full of strong heroes that you can use as a midlaner. After the changes introduced by Dota 2 patch 7.35c, some options became much better than others.

This guide presents five mid heroes that are currently popular and successful at the community level. All of them could easily help you to gain MMR.

Arc Warden

arc warden

Valve

Despite the massive nerfs he received in Dota 2 patch 7.35c, Arc Warden continues to have one of the highest win rates in the game. He’s currently in the top 3 and very few people can play him well, which is why you’re likely to be able to pick him whenever you want without fearing that he might get banned or picked by the other team.

Arc Warden’s strengths are numerous. The hero excels as a split-pusher, defender, and even frontline attacker during a siege. His Magnetic Field gives him excellent protection against physical attacks and magic damage. At the same time, it enhances his offensive capabilities.

This ability lasts for 6.5s but you can recast it immediately after with your Tempest Double for another 8s. So in total, you get around 15s of bonus attack speed, damage, and attack range, while having 100% evasion against ranged attacks from outside the field and 40% magic resistance.

Your allies also benefit from the buffs, so you’re essentially a kind of Faceless Void that can Chronosphere his own team, but in a good way and for a very long duration. Fighting against an Arc Warden team that’s sieging your base can be extremely challenging. And when you’re on the offensive, he can cast this powerful ability defensively, to protect allies and buildings.

Spark Wraith can be used to deal massive amounts of damage. It has a 4s cooldown and activates after just 2s. A wraith used to last for a very long time, but after Dota 2 patch 7.35c, it only lasts for 16s. But that’s still enough time to allow you to prepare a trap for your enemies.

You can probably create 3-4 wraiths at a single location and if an enemy passes through that location, they will take 340 damage per instance.

Flux is a powerful ability that helps you during the laning phase and in 1v1 situations. It deals 60 damage per second to isolated targets, lasts for 6s, and applies a 35% movement speed slow. This debuff is often devastating against melee heroes that don’t have an escape mechanism.

When playing Arc Warden, the most important items that you can buy are Hand of Midas, Gleipnir, Manta Style, and Boots of Travel. If the game goes on for long enough, Bloodthorn and Scythe of Vyse are also excellent choices.

Leshrac

leshrac

Valve

Leshrac used to be completely overpowered a few patches ago. He’s not anymore, but he is still one of the best heroes in the game. His win rate is close to 53% and his pick rate is just 4.5%, which makes him the ideal pick. You can spam him in most of your games without any problem.

Dota 2 patch 7.35c buffed Leshrac in major ways by giving him 4 extra damage per explosion for his Diabolic Edict ability. Pulse Nova now costs just 50 mana to activate at level 1 instead of 70. This makes it much easier to spam when you farm.

Leshrac wins games because he’s good against a lot of different types of hero compositions. He destroys illusion-based heroes like Phantom Lancer and can raze enemy buildings very quickly using his W, which deals a total of 1360 pure damage over 10 seconds.

Split Earth allows Lesh to stun multiple targets for 1.7s and deal 300 damage to each of them. This ability has an 11s cooldown, which makes it very powerful in team fights.

Lightning Storm deals 240 damage to 5 – 11 targets if they’re near each other. It also slows attack speed by 50 and movement speed by 75% for 1.2s. You can cast it every 4s, which makes it very hard to play against.

For most melee heroes, Leshrac is a terrifying enemy to play against without a Black King Bar. Because of this, you will get to dictate the tempo of the game. If you want to farm more, you won’t get contested in the first 20 minutes. But if you want to go on the offensive, few teams will want to fight you before you reach their tier 2 towers.

Pulse Nova allows Leshrac to farm quickly and relatively inexpensively. You will deal 80 – 180 damage per second at a cost of 25 – 65 mana. If your mana pool and mana regen is good enough, you won’t have any issues spamming this ability.

Zeus

zuus

Valve

Zeus is another powerful spell caster that can dominate the mid lane. When playing this hero, make sure you invest in items like Aether Lens and Kaya.

Zeus is currently spammed in pubs and you will encounter him in 16% of your games. His win rate is close to 53%, while his KDA ratio is incredibly high: 4.4.

That’s because of his ultimate, Thundergod’s Wrath, which deals massive global damage every 2 minutes. Thanks to the latest buffs, this ability now deals 300 – 550 flat damage plus 5 – 10% of the target’s max HP as damage.

Zeus has an easy way to farm, both in the laning phase and in the later stages of the game, thanks to his Arc Lightning and Lightning Bolt. The damage of the second ability was recently doubled against creeps, which gives Zeus the option to nuke the bigger creeps and speed up his farm significantly.

Using Heavenly Jump, Zeus can escape certain death or initiate fights. His enemies are damaged and slowed by 80% for 1.6s. Their attack speed is also slowed by 100 for the same duration. This ability only hits one target that’s close to Zeus. The jumping range is not very big, only 500. But combined with everything else, it gives the hero a reliable escape mechanism.

Viper

viper

Valve

Viper has been one of the best midlaners in Dota 2 for a long time. This hero has such a powerful early game kit that almost no other hero can lane against him successfully. As long as you play correctly, you should have a major advantage in the first 5-10 minutes of the game. And if that advantage is turned into a gold advantage, you might have an edge until the 20-minute mark.

That’s the point where Viper starts to fall off. But he doesn’t fall of like he used to. In the current meta, with all the items that you can buy, this hero is perfectly viable for a long time. You can be very tanky or you can play aggressively, using a build full of damage-dealing items.

Generally, you will want to buy items that give you a combination of stats, mobility, damage, and attack range. That’s why many players go for an early Hurricane Pike, a Black King Bar, or items like Manta Style.

Viper’s ultimate deals 70 – 150 damage per second and lasts for 6s. It also slows movement speed by 60 – 80% and attack speed by 80 – 160. It essentially neutralizes a powerful damage dealer on the enemy team, preventing him from attacking and moving properly.

Because of this, Viper is extremely feared by Dota 2 players. He’s not loved though. His weaknesses become obvious in the higher MMR brackets, where players know how to kite and outfarm you. But below Divine, you will win a lot of games with this hero.

Viper’s Corrosive Skin gives him natural magic resistance (25%), as well as a way of damaging opponents when he gets hit.

Nethertoxin is the perfect farming tool, which is why many players like to maximize it first. It lasts for 8s at level 4 and deals around 700 in a 400 radius area in that interval.

Poison Attack reduces movement speed and magic resistance with each attack. The maximum number of stacks is 5, the stack duration is 4s, and the debuffs per stack are substantial: 12% movement speed and 10% magic resistance. This means that a Viper with good attack speed will have a huge impact on an enemy in the late game after attacking for just 2-3s.

Sniper

sniper

Valve

Sniper is a very reliable hero in the mid lane and it’s not a surprise that he gets picked in 22% of Dota 2 games. You can comfortably attack enemies from a very long range and they need to find creative ways to close the distance. And even when they succeed, you can still overwhelm them thanks to your toolkit.

Sniper’s Take Aim gives him +400 attack range and can be activated to provide 100% Headshot chance plus another 200 attack range. Given that Headshot deals 110 bonus damage, knocks enemies back, and reduces their attack speed by 100%, when you activate Take Aim you essentially become impossible to kill by a melee hero that needs to right-click you.

During the laning phase, Sniper’s Shrapnel is extremely disruptive, slowing movement speed by 12 – 30% and dealing 25 – 70 damage per second in a 400 – 475 radius for 10 seconds. This means that you can hinder your enemy’s ability to farm and ensure that you farm properly.

The hero’s ultimate, Assassinate, deals 300 – 500 damage from a range of 3000 units. Its cooldown is just 20 – 10s, making it one of the most powerful ultimates in the game if you intend to fight frequently.
