Are beastcoast and Thunder Awaken forming a Dota 2 roster?

One of the top Dota 2 teams from South America, beastcoast appears to be set to undergo some significant changes despite their outstanding accomplishments at the International 2022.

Every year, the offseason is immediately followed by a wave of roster changes, and it appears that the South American region has already begun this year’s trend. Steven “StingeR” Mamani, the captain of beastcoast, teased a lineup of five players in a tweet, which he later deleted. The roster included three members of beastcoast and two members of Thunder Awaken. StingeR’s tweet comes just one day after Thunder Awaken’s player, Herrera “Darkmago” Gonzalo announced that he would no longer be a part of the team as the competitive scene of Dota 2 heads into the roster shuffle. With an outstanding performance in the tournament’s main event, Thunder Awaken broke the previous record of beastcoast’s lineup from TI9 and became the first South American Dota team to ever place in the top six.

The roster teased by StingeR includes:

  • Héctor “K1” Rodríguez
  • Herrera “Darkmago” Gonzalo
  • Rafael “Sacred” Yonatan
  • Elvis “Scofield” Peña
  • Steven “StingeR” Mamani

Are Bestcoast’s days of having a stable lineup numbered?

While Beastcoast might be a relatively new Dota 2 team, its members have prior experience in the scene, having played under the Infamous banner before. All five members of the team have been playing together since July 2019 while still on team Infamous, making them one of the longest-tenured five-man rosters in the Dota 2 scene. Beastcoast became one of the best teams in North America in terms of synergy and teamwork as a result of all those years of playing together by side.

Beastcoast’s roster, which was one of the darlings of TI9, disappointed in TI10, narrowly missing out on an upper-bracket berth and losing to Alliance in the first round of the lower bracket. Due to Beastcoast’s underwhelming performance at TI10, many people began to think that the roster’s success at TI9 was an outlier. However, they once again proved their potential during the Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season of 2021-2022. The team maintained its position as one of the top groups in North America placing third in the Winter Tour regional league and taking first place in the Regional Finals. Additionally, they qualified for the two Majors of the season by placing second in the regional leagues of the Spring and Summer Tours. In both the ESL One Stockholm and the PGL Arlington Majors, Beastcoast caused huge upsets over some big names and finished Top 6.

The team qualified for the TI11 tournament thanks to the DPC points they acquired through their outstanding performances throughout the season. After a slow start at the group stage, which resulted in a lower bracket berth in the main stage, the team rallied against Evil Geniuses and Hokori to keep their hopes alive. However, the North American team suffered a heartwrenching setback in round three of the lower bracket against the oldest horses of Aegis of Champions PSGLGD. Although the squad managed to finish in the respectable seventh to the eighth spot, they once again fell short of making the top four in the event. However, if StingeR’s tweet about a new roster comes to fruition, it will significantly alter the Dota 2 scene, especially in the American region, bringing some of the best players from South and North America together.
