A few hours ago, Valve expanded its qualification system for the CS:GO Major Championships in 2023.

Changes in the official rules

Valve has decided to update its rules regarding the CS:GO Major Championships ranking system as of last Monday, December 12, which will start to be reflected next year.

One of the most critical changes in the rules is the addition of a closed qualifier event on the road to the different RMRs. In addition, specific teams will be directly invited through regional rankings that have just been added.

Another highlight of these new regulations is that RMR Asia will have additional slots, which opens up the possibility for many more teams to dream of being in a Major event.

Format of the closed qualifiers

Closed qualifiers must be held in each of the regions and may be organized in online mode.

The teams participating in these closed qualifiers shall be “at least” twice the number of squads qualifying for the RMR. In addition, at least half of the teams participating in these events must be invited according to their position in the regional rankings.

Likewise, Valve has not yet specified what these regional rankings will look like.

Finally, teams not invited to these events will have the opportunity to fight for a place in the RMR through open qualifiers.

Each region can divide its qualifiers.

This is one of the main points of these qualifiers in the case that will be played in online mode.

Regions are free to split these closed qualifiers to avoid different problems regarding player pinging. While these problems are not generally seen in Europe, Asia or CIS, it is more common in the Americas than you might think.

In the Americas region, one could divide these closed qualifiers for North America and another for South America.

If this is the case, the slots awarded to the winners should be shared equally. However, if this is not possible, the remaining quota will be awarded to the region with the highest-ranked team in the regional ranking.

Increase in RMR slots in Asia

Another change in this new regulation affects (positively) the Asia-Pacific region.

As mentioned above, this region will increase the number of RMR slots from four to eight. This is undoubtedly a relief for many fans and teams, as there is a greater chance of seeing several squads from this region in the Majors.

From now on, we will have more top-level professional Counter-Strike competitions where we will observe the incredible talent in the different regions ahead of the next Major to be held in Paris from May 8 to 21, 2023, which will be organized by BLAST.
