It seems that the Chinese esports scene knows how to celebrate the region’s best players. Wang “Ame” Chunyu has won the Returning Esports Player of the Year award for 2023. This is not a huge surprise, given his track record and the fact that his absence was felt by teams and fans alike.

Ame was inactive for an entire year. At the age of 26, that’s quite surprising. But then again, Dota 2 is not the kind of game that you can play casually if you want to win tournaments. You either give it your all or you might as well not even try.

Getting married is a time-consuming process, so it made perfect sense for Ame to step back from competitive play and take care of his personal life. But in December 2023, he decided to return. But he will not compete for LGD Gaming. Instead, he joined Xtreme Gaming, where he will have excellent teammates like Dy, XinQ, Xxs, and Xm.

The first three of these players are legendary in China, thanks to their past results. The 4th still needs to prove himself but before joining Xtreme, he won ESL One Kuala Lumpur with Azure Ray.

Ame’s career

Ame started his professional career back in 2015. He quickly made a name for himself and was signed by LGD Gaming, where he remained until the end of 2023, with the exception of a seven-month period that he spent competing for CDEC Gaming.

Ame’s results in tournaments have been phenomenal. He played in two TI Grand Finals and finished the tournament in the top four at four different editions. He also won Majors like MDL Changsha, EPICENTER XL, and WePlay AniMajor. In 2022, he won the Riyadh Masters.

It’s hard to ask for more from a player but he probably doesn’t want to retire without winning The International. On two occasions he was extremely close but ended up losing 2-3. The first time it happened in 2018 against OG, while the second time it happened in 2021 against Team Spirit.

We do not yet know how strong his new team is. We’ll find out at BetBoom Dacha Dubai in two weeks. Normally, given Ame’s prowess and the results obtained by the other members of the roster, we should be optimistic. At the moment, only a handful of teams look difficult to beat. Xtreme should prove capable of finishing any Dota 2 event this year in the top six.
