Will KuroKy retire at the end of DPC 2023?

Kuro “KuroKy” Takhasomi is 30 years old. He’s been around since day one and he even played DotA before starting to compete in Dota 2.

Taken as a whole, his career has been phenomenal, even though he hasn’t done anything significant after the end of The International 2019. He played in three TI Grand Finals and won the Aegis of Champions once, in 2017.

Over the years, KuroKy also won numerous tier 1 events and several Majors, including EPICENTER 2016, EPICENTER 2017, and China Dota2 Supermajor. At the Shanghai Major 2016 and the Manila Major 2016 he finished second.

Almost all of his triumphs were achieved while playing for Team Liquid. Since he created his own esports organization, Nigma, his career became similar to that of Danil “Dendi” Ishutin, who also tried to succeed on his own and failed.

It’s hard to tell why the failures occurred. KuroKy is a phenomenal captain and a highly skilled player. The sudden performance drop that took place between the end of TI9 and the start of 2020 makes very little sense.  And yet it happened.

Nigma’s failures

Nigma Galaxy has been trying from its inception to qualify for The International. But each year, something went wrong. Until recently, the team managed to retain a lot of valuable players and had all the necessary ingredients to be one of the best. But something happened behind the scenes.

We don’t know what, but we did see the impact it had on the team’s performance. Initially, Nigma failed to qualify for TI. Then it failed to keep its spot in WEU’s Division I. Things went from bad to worse for KuroKy and now, even his players have started to leave his team.

Recently, Nigma lost Sumail “Sumail” Hassan, who moved to Team Aster. The team also lost Ammar “ATF” Al-Assaf, who moved to Quest Esports. On top of that, it lost Amer “Miracle-” Al-Barkawi, who’s been ill for quite some time and is still inactive.

Apart from KuroKy, the only players who are left are Maroun “GH” Merhej and Ivan “MinD_ContRoL” Ivanov. The latter recently competed at the Berlin Major. He played as a stand-in for OG and looked very excited to compete at a Major after years of failures.

This experience might have convinced him that he is still a great player and that he is making a big mistake by continuing to play for Nigma.

The entire situation indicates that 2023 might be the last season for KuroKy. But, given his determination, he might try again with a different roster in 2024.
