With the first stage of the Winter Split concluded and the LEC Group Stage just around the corner, there are different opinions regarding the new format implemented in the League of Legends EMEA region.

While in most cases, the changes in the different leagues do not meet the expectations raised by the community members, this time, it has been completely different. Now, with the playoffs closer than ever, where the teams will play all BO3 matches, except for the grand final, which will be played in BO5, the fans’ verdict has been very favorable.

Regular audience, but the format was a success

The LEC Winter Split had lower audience numbers than expected at the start of the tournament. However, fans have taken it upon themselves to give their respective feedback regarding the format in a Reddit thread; as mentioned, they all have positive comments.

New LEC format appreciation thread from leagueoflegends

Like any other Reddit thread where community members share their opinions, this one, regarding the LEC format, started quietly and then picked up steam. All fans agree that the fact that the regular Split has been shortened has increased the importance of each game. A single point can make the difference in qualifying or not for the Group Stage.

The user who started the son said:

“Seriously. What an improvement. Every game is important. There are immediate stakes in every game. No week feels insignificant. Nobody can relax or unwind. This is fantastic for competition and hype. A great element is how it makes BDS and Astralis tryhard for their lives. It’s a night and day difference for these lower teams who have to show up early now.”

On the other hand, the fact that there is now a three-week window, according to some users, fits like a glove for the different teams. This is because the teams will have enough time to show their full potential in each match.

It is challenging for the teams to play BO3 in the Group Stage

By now, there is no doubt that teams must be clear that playing the best-of-three matches in the Group Stage is a challenge. This forces the players to be alert and adapt to any change or strategy. Moreover, thanks to this, we will witness many more surprises in the coming weeks.

On the other hand, this may be of great expectation for many community members, as some claim that it is now more enjoyable for them to watch all the matches. For example, another user on the Reddit thread said:

“I may pay attention to the entire regular season instead of just watching week one and the finale.”

While it is still too recent to label this new format as good or bad, and the “success” of this format has not yet been seen in terms of audience, there is still plenty of time to see if it bears the expected fruits.

Finally, let’s remember that the Group Stage of the LEC Winter Split starts next Saturday, February 11, 2023.
