Reports emerging this week suggest that FC Barcelona are set to enter the League of Legends scene, with the Spanish organization believed to have acquired the spot of S2V Esports. The news means that there would be direct competition between the Spanish giants and current player Gerard Pique, who has recently established a LoL team with streamer and content creator Ibai Llanos.

Barcelona will compete in Spain’s Superliga, having become the latest soccer club to have entered Rift. News of their latest venture came from Spanish outlet 2Playbook, who reported that Barcelona saw off competition from Case eSports and Sevilla FC, who were both interested in purchasing S2V Esports’ spot.

Why it is an Exciting Time for FC Barcelona eSports

There has been a major shake up in the Spanish Regional League of late, with Astralis having given up their position to the joint venture led by Pique and Llanos. Barcelona already competes in professional Rocket League and Hearthstone, having also decided to play KONAMI’s new title, eFootbal.Pro, rather than FIFA. They have not achieved much in such fields to date, which is perhaps part of the reason as to why they have entered the League of Legends scene.

Barcelona have been close to entering League of Legends in the past. They supposedly agreed a deal with Tencent to enter the Chinese LoL scene, however the financial situation of the organization has meant that the arrangement has “yet to be activated”. It remains unclear as to which players and staff will feature on Barcelona’s LoL team, however the report from 2Playbook states that the org has already hired a head coach.

Why Barcelona Will Be Going Up Against One Of Its Own in LoL

Meanwhile, the team co-owned by Barcelona defender Pique and streamer Llanos, while not having a name yet, has got many fans excited. The duo purchased the slot held by Astralis SB back at the beginning of September, with many LoL followers counting down the days until they take on FC Barcelona. Pique has made over 350 appearances for Barcelona over the years, with the fan favourite also having 100+ international caps to his name.

Streaming icon Llabos and Pique also hosted a balloon keep-up World Cup on October 14, an event which was ultimately won by Peru. Having attracted major interest from viewers online, the event will have only added to the expectation surrounding their League of Legends team.
