The world of competitive TeamFight Tactics is getting a huge shake-up for Set 11 and beyond. Riot Games has announced their biggest changes yet to the way players compete in TFT esports.

The main goals are to create more consistency in the regional competition structure around the world, introduce new layers of exciting competition, and make the qualifying process for the world championships more flexible while keeping a clear path for players.

Championships Get Rebalanced Seeding

At the top, the biggest change is a rebalancing of seeding for the Set Championships (now rebranded as Tactician’s Crowns). A baseline of 7 slots will be distributed to each of the four pan-regions: Americas, EMEA, APAC, and China.

However, the top 3 performing pan-regions from the previous Tactician’s Crown will get 1 extra seed each. The winner of the last Crown also receives an automatic slot if they qualify for their regional finals. This allows for some advantage based on recent performance.

Regional Cups and Finals Standardized

The regional competition itself is moving to a pan-regional model with synchronized cups and finals. Each set will have 3 Regional Cups that seed into a Regional Final (newly dubbed Tactician’s Trials, Tactician’s Cups, and Pan-Regional Golden Spatulas).

These events will take place on the same weekends and patches across all regions. The exact qualifying methods will vary slightly by pan-region based on server setups. Riot is working to streamline the formats globally while maintaining what worked well in previous regional systems.

Total prize pools have been standardized at $85,000 USD per pan-region per set, which is an increase in most cases.

China will maintain its own separate structure befitting the massive TFT playerbase there, including the licensed mobile version Fates Fighting: Glory Stars (FFGS).

Introducing the “Tactician” Branding

Riot is rolling out new global branding and naming conventions to make it easier to follow TFT esports events across regions. They include:

  • Tactician Trials (opening qualifiers)
  • Tactician’s Cups (3 cups per set)
  • Pan-Regional Golden Spatula (the pan-regional final)
  • Tactician’s Crown (the global championship)

The first Tactician’s Crown under this new system will be the Inkborn Fables Tactician’s Crown for Set 11.

Tips for New TFT Players

As competitive TFT continues evolving, the game itself can seem daunting for new players. Pro player Adrian Basil from Bengaluru offers a step-by-step guide on how to approach TeamFight Tactics:

  1. Understand the core gameplay of building a team comp, placing units on the tactical grid, and battling opponents 1-on-1 each round.
  2. Research champions and items thoroughly. Knowing their abilities, synergies, and what items enhance them is crucial before playing.
  3. Build a strong core board, aiming for 2-4 two-star champions as they’ll be stronger than most one-star units even without synergies.
  4. Construct a good frontline (tanks) and backline (damage dealers). Early game frontliners like Leona and backliners like Ziggs are recommended.
  5. Position champions intelligently, blocking the opponent’s offense with your defensive front line. Scout opponents and reposition each couple rounds.
  6. Scout upcoming opponents between rounds to see their unit positioning and adapt your board accordingly.
  7. Learn economic management, knowing when to spend gold on units/levels or accumulate interest. Getting to 50 gold unlocks more options.
  8. Transition from early/mid game into a powerful late game team composition featuring high-cost 4/5-cost champions.

With these organizational changes and strategic advice, TeamFight Tactics appears poised to elevate its esports scene to new heights of competitiveness and viewership in the years ahead. Veteran and aspiring players alike should find the game’s future an exciting prospect.
