The Overwatch League has revealed that the Playoffs and Grand Finals will be held in Toronto to cap up OWL’s 2023 season.

The Overwatch League is prepared to return to Canada after taking a break in Seoul, South Korea for the Midseason Madness competition. The Toronto Defiant will host the OWL Playoffs and Grand Finals in downtown Toronto, Canada, marking it the second significant OWL event to be held in the city after the 2022 Summer Showdown.

The Playoffs and Grand Final of the league will take place at the Mattamy Athletic Complex, which previously played host to the 2022 Summer Showdown LAN competition. The venue is a part of the storied structure, which served as the Toronto Maple Leafs’ former home stadium.

The momentous event will serve as a new homestand for Toronto Defiant, similar to how the 2019 OWL grand finals served as Philadelphia Fusion’s homestand and the 2018 OWL grand finals served as New York Excelsior’s homestand.

As a result of their poor performance and early elimination at the Spring Stage Knockouts, the Toronto Defiant must perform well during the Summer Stage to advance directly to the Playoffs. If they falter at the Summer Stage, they will have to participate in the Play-in round to guarantee their place in the Playoffs.

The Overwatch League Schedule:

This year’s Overwatch League Playoffs will begin on September 28, and last for three days, ending on September 30. The premium tickets for the event, such as VIP and floor tickets, will go on sale on July 21, while the general admission tickets will go on sale on July 28.

  • Playoffs: September 20 to September 30
  • Grand Finals: October 1

The Overwatch League format and prize pool

Following the play-in competitions, the top five teams from the Western zone and the top three teams from the Eastern zone will move on to the Playoffs. The playoff format for the league is a little different this year, with teams being divided into two groups of four for a double-elimination bracket. The top two teams from each group will proceed to the Grand Finals, which will feature a single-elimination format.

The winning team in the Overwatch League in 2023 will take home a magnificent trophy and USD 1,000,000 in prize money, while the teams that come second and third will each receive sizeable rewards of $400,000 and $225,000, respectively. Even finishing in the top four will be impressive and gratifying as there are monetary awards available for sixth place.
