Stockholm-based AAA game studio GOALS has raised $20m in Series A funding to develop its soccer video game which the company claims will revolutionize the football game genre.

The highly anticipated soccer game GOAL has secured $20 million in Series A funding, which was led by Reddit founder Alexis Ohanian’s venture capital company Seven Seven Six. Other venture capitalists including Northzone, Moonfire, and Cassius are also on the list of investors.

The title also attracted a number of well-known angel investors, including Riqui Puig, a midfielder for the LA Galaxy, Wayne Mackey, the founder and CEO of Statespace/Aimlabs, and Peter Sellis, the senior vice president for products at Discord. The latest funding round brings GOAL’s total financing to $39 million with earlier investments coming from Cherry Ventures, Banana Capital, and Not Boring Capital,

GOALS, which currently has 50 team members and industry experts from Big studios like Activision, Ubisoft, and EA on board, will accelerate hiring and development with the help of Series A investment. The most recent round of funding will be utilized to increase the company’s headcount to 75 workers over the next years, giving engineering-related positions a top priority.

More about the soccer game GOALS

GOALS was created in 2021 with the goal of redefining the football genre by SK Gaming’s founder and former Counter-Strike global champion Andreas Thorstensson. A brief cinematic trailer of GOALS was released back in December 2021 followed by a single-player beta in September 2022 and a multiplayer beta release in February 2023.

According to devs, GOAL plans to optimize the game to work on outdated consoles and low-end PC hardware, as well as provide cross-platform play across consoles and PC. GOALS is aiming to replace FIFA and eFootball with its free-to-play model, crossplay, and sustainable esports scene.

Sadly, the game’s esports readiness was only hinted at in the launch video and is otherwise somewhat vague. With its emphasis on fast, fluid, and enjoyable gameplay, as well as its commitment to transparency and open dialogue with its community, GOAL aims to provide football fans with the top-notch gaming experience they’ve been waiting for.

With the support of prominent investors, GOALS is undoubtedly a game to watch in the years to come, even though it is yet unclear how successful the title will be. Fans of football simulation games, on the other hand, are keen to see if the Stockholm-based game will unseat FIFA or eFootball as the leading brand in the industry.
