The exodus of organizations in the competitive scene of different esports continues. This time, it has been announced that Spacestation Gaming will leave the Apex Legends competitive scene.

It is no secret to anyone that the North American Apex Legends is gaining a foothold at the top of the world rankings in the run-up to the ALGS Split Two 2023. Some teams are showing their full potential and delighting us with wonderful plays, while others are trying to recover and be competitive.

However, despite the rise of Apex Legends in the NA region, the North American organization Spacestation Gaming has decided to leave the scene without giving many explanations.

Spacestation Gaming is dropping its Apex lineup

One of the most veteran organizations in the competitive esports scene in NA and, above all, in Apex Legends, announces that it is letting go of its luxury trio. This means that, after three years in the organization, Mark “Dropped” Thees, Joseph “Frexs” Sanchez, and Angello “Xenial” Cadenas are now free agents.

There is no doubt that this trio of players has had spectacular performances throughout their career and especially playing under the Spacestation Gaming banner. Their most notable achievements have been fifth place in the 2021 NA Championship and sixth place in the 2022 Championship. However, in the 2023 Split One Playoffs, the team could not perform as well as desired and finished in sixteenth place.

The organization’s executives point to financial problems

Shawn “Unit” Pellerin, CEO of Spacestation Gaming, said:

“We are going to miss Apex Legends and watching our team compete; it really is one of the most entertaining esports.

Unfortunately, the esports market is currently without a fair rev share partnership to help with sustainability. As a result, it’s hard to justify continuing to invest.”

On the other hand, Unit also noted that if EA and Respawn changed their revenue-sharing policies, the organization could return to the scene.

In the past 2023 Playoffs Split One, the ALGS team store returned. According to EA and Respawn’s bylaws, a portion of the revenue from this store goes to the organizations participating in the tournament. However, many organizations expressed that they were very concerned about the developers’ commitment to the Apex competitive scene.

Unit is not the first to speak out on the matter

Recently, Team Liquid CEO Steve Arhancet publicly denounced what they consider an “unfair” relationship between EA and the various ALGS teams. Arhancet said:

“We strive to only participate in games where the developers support the teams so that the teams can support their players, with the hope that, one day, competitive Apex can follow that model, and we can then return to competition.”

We can only wait for the future of the released players and those who remain in the organization. On the other hand, Spacestation Gaming’s place in the AGLS could be filled by another team in the coming days.

Lately, we have noticed how many organizations have left the scene of different esports, citing problems with game developers. If the developers do not work hand in hand with the teams, there is no doubt that the scene will weaken from one moment to another.
