There is no doubt that the recent announcement regarding the release of Counter-Strike 2 has been the beginning of many rumors regarding veteran players who could return to Valve’s shooter besides being very exciting for the whole community. However, amid all these rumors, we live the announcement that Jacob “pyth” Mourujärvi is retiring from the VALORANT competitive scene.

First, we should mention that pyth was one of the first professional CS:GO players who decided to jump to VALORANT in 2020 with the launch of Riot’s shooter. With the release of CS2 next summer and a lot of positive feedback about the beta that has been tested since two days ago, pyth is rumored to return to his origins.

Pyth announces its retirement from the VALORANT scene

On March 22, minutes after Valve announced the CS2 release, Jacob “pyth” Mourujärvi announced his retirement as a VALORANT professional on his Twitter account.

pyth is one of the veterans in the esports scene who is still active. His beginnings were in 2010 when Counter-Strike 1.6 was still active. Then, with the release of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, pyth was part of many teams in the professional scene, including:

  • SK Gaming (2013)
  • FlipSid3 Tactics (2014)
  • Luminosity Gaming (2015)
  • Ninjas in Pyjamas (2015-2017).

Playing under the NiP banner, pyth was one of the team’s mainstays in victories at DreamHack Masters Malmö 2016 and IEM Oakland 2016.

In 2020, when he was no longer part of a team at the highest competitive level, he decided to leap, looking for new opportunities for Riot Games’ tactical shooter VALORANT.

At that time, the player signed with TRAUMA, a team he belonged to for only two months before jumping to G2 Esports. Finally, after a year and a half in the European organization, pyth was sent to the team’s bench, and then in December 2021, he signed with Bleed eSports, which was his team until August 2022.

pyth’s future

While the player has not officially announced what he will do in the future, it is widely rumored that his retirement is due to the release of CS2. On the other hand, if we look at the player’s Twitter feed, we can see that he has not made a single post since last December 16, 2023. However, on March 22, he retweeted the official announcement of CS2 and 30 minutes later announced his retirement from VALORANT.

On the other hand, to further increase the rumors about his possible return to Valve’s shooter, a professional VALORANT player and friend of pyth, Vladyslav “arch” Svistov, posted a “somewhat direct” message in response to the retirement announcement.

We can only wait for pyth to deny or confirm the rumors of his departure from the VALORANT scene. For he would not be the only one delighted with the changes made by Valve in the new Counter-Strike 2.

Remember that Tarik “tarik” Celik has also given an excellent opinion regarding CS2, and rumors of his possible return have also started.
