Aaron Keller, the game director for Overwatch 2, recently tweeted about some matchmaking changes. The change will reduce groups of players with significant skill gaps. According to reports, this matchmaking adjustment would be implemented in two sections over two days.

Overwatch 2 players have already complained about the matchmaking problems and asked for the necessary adjustments. The developers have solved the problem and reduced the differences to even out the lobbies. When these adjustments have been made, the lobbies should include more people with similar skill levels.

Read on to learn about all the Overwatch 2 matchmaking adjustments.

Overwatch 2 Matchmaking

Overwatch 2 has attracted many players since its inception, thanks to its free-to-play nature. Unfortunately, a large percentage of the player community has encountered mismatched lobbies, where some participants were more skilled than others. This often results in many players experiencing many defeats and having a bad experience in the game.

Overwatch 2’s uneven matchmaking system has been a significant cause for concern. As a result, the game director has described several adjustments in a blog post following the latest Season 3 update.

Balanced matchmaking

Shortly after the Season 3 patch was released, Aaron Keller gave his opinion on Overwatch 2. The game director points out that hero modifications have improved compared to Season 2, taking into account the numerous community discussions and user feedback. On the other hand, he says the matchmaking mechanism may be improved to add lobbies with the least MMR (Match Making Rating) difference.

According to the game director, the Season 3 update will strive to optimize player matchmaking strategies for certain positions. This was demonstrated with a pair of DPS players belonging to different teams. The skill levels of both players are equalized to produce a more balanced experience.

Lobby wait times in both ranked and unranked lobbies have increased due to pairing adjustments. This is more problematic for squads waiting for matched pairings if the skill difference is more significant. However, some adjustments have already been introduced to decrease waiting times in all lobbies.

The primary demand for a fair matchmaking system comes from the ranking lobbies, where users queue and compete against players of vastly different skill levels. However, some Overwatch 2 players have also expressed frustration at experiencing winning and losing streaks due to this problem.

The game director assured players that this was an unintended consequence and not from setting a win limit that would benefit the system.

Reduction of MMR differences

According to reports, the matchmaking has been tweaked and will receive another update that seeks to decrease MMR differences in lobbies and wait times. However, it is essential to remember that these adjustments do not ensure a resolution, and some players may still experience matchmaking issues.

On the other hand, the changes in matchmaking apply from February 28 to March 1. So very soon, players should notice the modifications and more equitable lobbies with little skill difference.

There will be multiple changes to hero balance in the Season 3 midseason patch, and Roadhog and Sombra may receive new abilities. Additionally, the next update can completely erase the existing meta and create a new one.
