OG are doing much better than expected in the WEU Qualifier for BetBoom Dacha Dubai. The $1 million tournament will take place in February but it will feature only 12 teams. Seven of them received direct invitations, while the other five have been selected based on qualifiers.

In Western Europe, the biggest favorites were Team Secret, Tundra Esports, and OG. All three of them are still in the race. OG are already qualified for the Grand Final, while Secret and Tundra will play later today in the lower bracket Final.

OG’s race so far

OG started the tournament with a best-of-one match against Tundra. Despite their fancy draft, which included lots of squishy heroes like Invoker, Lina, and Hoodwink, OG proved to have a very capable roster. From the start, it was clear that they knew exactly what they wanted to do and how they had to solve the major obstacles that stood in their way.

The match was over in just 27 minutes, which is a clear sign of a stomp in Dota 2. Tundra’s Anti-Mage strategy collapsed very quickly when they started to lose tier 1 towers and map control. By minute 10, the gold difference was already 3500. Eight minutes later, it was 10.000. The final kill score was 37 – 12 in favor of OG.

The second match was played against Team Tickles and once again, OG picked Hoodwink twice, along with Vengeful Spirit, IO, and other heroes. They won in just two games, the second of which was a 23-minute stomp.

In the upper bracket Final, Team Secret decided to not risk it and banned their Hoodwink in phase 1, along with Timbersaw and Phoenix. They banned this first hero in both games, just to make sure that they don’t pick it. But it didn’t help. OG won in 40 and 26 minutes respectively, using Chen, Windranger, Enchantress, and other heroes that tend to dominate the early game.

Both times, their strategy was to win the lanes and then make space for a carry that had the potential to win the game on his own if properly farmed. The first time, the choice was Alchemist. The second time, it was Faceless Void.

In the Alchemist match, OG never managed to properly snowball and had to play with a 6000 gold lead, which they lost at the 35-minute mark. But in the end, thanks to a brilliant team fight, they ended up winning anyway. Now they are waiting in the Grand Final and will most likely qualify for BetBoom Dacha Dubai later today.
