In 2023 we can expect the release of a new Mortal Kombat game.

Unbeknownst to its developers at NetherRealm Studios, Mortal Kombat 12 has been confirmed. The long-awaited fighting game will be released in 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav announced this week to investors on a company conference call.

Mortal Kombat 12

Considering the characteristic secrecy with which NetherRealm, the Mortal Kombat game studio, has treated the titles it works on, the announcement was made with very little publicity. Given that the developer has alternated creating sequels for its Mortal Kombat and Injustice series for years, many people took it for granted that Injustice 3 would be its next title. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

During the investor call, Zaslav paused to highlight the accomplishments of the WB Games division. Hogwarts Legacy was our starting point because of its incredible success. In just two weeks, it has sold more than 12 million copies and brought in $850 million for the firm. In contrast, Elden Ring sold 20 million copies in a year.

Announcement of new games

When it comes to announcing new games, NetherRealm and Rockstar Games follow the same strategy. Both companies remain silent until a year or a few months before the launch. This is the time when they suddenly unleash the marketing apparatus.

Lately, the fighting game studio has set a steady pace to release new installments of its franchises one after another.

But in the case of Mortal Kombat 11, the developer left it much longer thanks to its popularity and great success. Before definitively suspending its support for DLC, the studio went so far as to release an expansion in 2020 that included several new fighters.

NetherRealm may want to start working on a sequel as soon as feasible, given that a Mortal Kombat movie sequel and the franchise’s overall track record of success are in development.

The Mortal Kombat 11 story even concluded with a reboot of the entire universe. Setting up stories and events spanning decades to usher in a new era for its characters.

Be that as it may, it’s doubtful that NetherRealm envisioned this exposition for its next game. It might be disappointing that the sequel is being presented at an investor call.

However, fighting game fans can look forward to a fantastic year. Tekken 8 is likely to be released by the end of the year, while Street Fighter 6 comes out in June. In addition, riot Games’ fighting game League of Legends will likely get more attention in the coming months.
