In Dota 2, Quinn Callahan is one of the best-known midlaners. His prowess makes him formidable in his role. And his team, Gaimin Gladiators, dominated the professional scene last season. They did not win the most important tournaments, Riyadh Masters and The International 12, but they did win everything else.

Quinn is now the highest-ranking player on the EU Server. He has recently reached 13.000 MMR and his understanding of the game is better than almost everyone else’s at this point.

One of the reasons why his achievement is incredible is that he is originally from North America. He came to Europe at the start of the 2023 season and adapted very quickly to the style of Dota played on the old continent.

For a North American to dominate the strongest region in the world is absolutely unheard of. A quick look at the standings table shows that he is the only American player in the top 25. Another strong player from North America is Sneyking, but he is ranked 29th.

The relevance of MMR

Some will argue that MMR is not that relevant because it’s one thing to succeed in a disorganized pub environment, where everyone plays more or less whatever feels right or interesting at a personal level, and a completely different thing to succeed at the professional level, as part of a well-organized team.

For many players, pubs are so random that they don’t offer much apart from the ability to practice heroes and better learn what works in the current meta. But when you’re the highest-ranked player in the region and one of the highest-ranked players in the world, that’s a clear indication that your skills far surpass those of the average pro.

In the history of Dota 2, very few players reached 13.000 MMR. We know that 23savage did it around a year go, and Pure a bit more recently. This seems to be the highest peak we’ll ever see in the current matchmaking system. Perhaps if Valve changes something, there will be someone who will reach 14.000 MMR in the next few years. Otherwise, it looks impossible.

The difference between a 13.000 MMR player and even a 10.000 MMR player is enormous. That rating difference is not just a number. It represents the competence difference between the two players. When you’re 13.000 MMR, you understand the game at a level that most of the other players can’t even imagine.
