Microsoft brings Discord voice chat to Xbox

Microsoft adds Discord’s most popular and valuable audio chat feature to the Xbox, enabling users to connect with friends on other platforms using voice channels, whether they are using the Xbox or a PC.

After years of anticipation, discord’s voice chat functionality is available on Xbox systems. According to an official Xbox blog post, players will be able to voice chat with their friends on Discord through voice channels directly from Xbox. The feature will make it accessible for players to communicate with friends across various gaming platforms. In the next few weeks, there is a good chance that the upgrade, which is now in testing, may become available to additional users in addition to a select group of Xbox Insiders.

How to link your Xbox with Discord Accounts

1. Install the Discord application on your computer or mobile device, then log in with your Discord account.
2. Install the Xbox app on your mobile device, then log in with your Xbox credentials.
3. On your Xbox, select the Try Discord voice on Xbox option under the Parties & chats page of the Xbox Guide menu.
4. Use the Discord QR code scanner to scan the code; you may be prompted to join the Discord beta program so that you can link the Discord account and Xbox.
5. If you previously linked your Discord account to Xbox, you might need to re-link it in order to accept the updated voice permissions of Discord.
6. Sign in with your Xbox account and authorize Discord to connect with your Xbox account.
7. Start a voice chat on Discord once the setup is complete, then select the transfer to Xbox option.
8. Choose the Xbox console on the Xbox mobile app to bring the voice chat.

Since there isn’t a specific Discord app for the Xbox, Discord voice chat on Xbox essentially acts as a voice transfer from Discord to an Xbox, preventing participants from directly joining Discord chats from the console. It will force players to always use the mobile app to sling calls across.

Although Microsoft hasn’t given a specific date for the public release of Discord voice chat functionality, the company typically tests new features for a few weeks or months before making them accessible to the general public. Additionally, Sony also unveiled plans to integrate Discord with PlayStation earlier this year, allowing users of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 to set up a two-way link between their console and Discord.
