Insider trading? Copenhagen Flames players buy their own stickers

The Danish organization Copenhagen Flames recently filed for bankruptcy and ceased all activities. Now the Copenhagen Flames CS:GO line-up is being accused of buying their own stickers shortly before the organization declared bankruptcy in hopes of making money from it after the organization’s demise.

CS:GO in-game stickers are a big deal that fans can enjoy and trade, swap and resell to your heart’s content. A lot of money can be made with the stickers, certain in-game cosmetics have even been sold for six-figure sums in the past.

In game items as an investment

The price of some skins is increased by their rarity value, for example when organizations no longer exist. Stickers from disbanded organizations have become more expensive over the years and have great collector’s value.

Many skin merchants and players have learned that if an organization collapses or leaves the scene in the hopes of bouncing back in price, it’s a good investment to buy their decals. And as it seems, some players of the Copenhagen Flames have recognized exactly that and tried to earn something extra financially.

Did the CPH players know about the bankruptcy?

The Copenhagen Flames esports organization announced yesterday that they have filed for bankruptcy due to financial problems. Shortly after the announcement that the organization was disbanding, skin trader Dennis Davis noted that some Copenhagen Flames players were mass-buying stickers from their own team just before the bankruptcy announcement.

A few days ago, skin retailer Satsdart noticed that it was getting a ton of orders from Copenhagen Flames players Asger “farlig” Jensen, Thomas “TMB” Bundsbæk, and Rasmus “raalz” Steensborg via Buff, a skin trading website.

Satsdart was confused at first, but then realized why they were suspiciously buying loads of stickers – because they were about to have rarity value. Satsdart responded to Dennis Davis’ tweet with a video showing how much he traded with the three players.

Community not enthusiastic about sticker purchase

The sticker purchase from the three players caused some controversy in the community. They obviously knew their organization was broke and would be dissolved. So they had stocked up on Steickenr just beforehand, hoping that after the dissolution it would increase in value and make them more money. Many people from the CS:GO community didn’t like that and accused the players of insider trading. However, there is no official rule that prohibits such acts.
