The group stage of IEM Sydney finished with some very interesting results. Most of the best teams qualified, but not all of them. Cloud9, Natus Vincere, Monte, Fnatic, and Team Vitality were among the unpleasant surprises.

On the other hand, we had Complexity and FaZe Clan rising to the occasion and performing really well. The biggest surprise was caused by BetBoom Team, who finished 2nd in group A despite having zero chances of qualifying in theory.

For those who haven’t followed CIS CS2 recently, BetBoom strength comes in part from the transfer of nafany, who is a former Cloud9 member and one of the best players in Russia. In the first match of the tournament, against Vitality, his performance (22-22) and that of KaiR0N- (28-22) had a big impact and led to an unexpected victory: 16-14 on Mirage.

Group A results

In group A of IEM Sydney, the winner was MOUZ. This is hardly surprising given Na’Vi’s internal issues. With s1mple not wanting to play in the tournament, B1ad3 had to take his place and was not able to help his team against the world’s best players.

Despite winning their match against Apeks (13-9), Na’Vi ended up losing against MOUZ (1-2) and FaZe Clan (1-2). FaZe had lost their first match against GamerLegion, which gave MOUZ an easy path to the semifinals.

BetBoom finished 2nd after winning against Vitality and GamerLegion. They were close to beating MOUZ too, but they ended up losing on Mirage after an excellent first half: 9-3 into 15-19. It seems that the MR12 format is causing some issues.

FaZe Clan ended up finishing 3rd in this group.

Group B results

In group B, G2 Esports won five consecutive maps and advanced to the semifinals. Despite encountering strong opponents like Complexity and ENCE, they proved to be one step ahead of everyone else.

The short videos we saw a few months ago, with m0NESY and NiKo clearly enjoying the process of discovering CS2, seem to have been a good indicator that G2 are excited about the new game and will do well in tournaments this year, at least until the other teams catch up.

Nobody was surprised by ENCE’s 2nd place in this group because Snappi’s team has been one of the best in the world for many months. What was exciting to see, on the other hand, was Complexity’s performance, which allowed them to finish 3rd and go to the playoffs.
