The second European RMR for IEM Rio Major has concluded without a single important upset. There were, however, a few smaller ones.

Team Vitality failed to secure a Legend status spot for the tournament and will need to play right from the start. But other than that, we’ve had no surprises.

Tournament results

Given how poorly Natus Vincere had performed at ESL Pro League Season 16, a lot of CS:GO fans were worried that perhaps this was the beginning of the end for them. The possibility of missing the Major because of a disastrous result in the RMRs was certainly on everyone’s minds.

But as soon as the tournament started, it became clear that Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev and his squad were ready to smash everyone. Their first match against Illuminar Gaming was a formality (16-5 on Dust II). But even the next two matches, which were played against tier-1 opponents, posed very little challenge.

The team that surprised the most in this tournament was ENCE. Their round score was almost as good as Na’Vi’s: +27. The only problem with their 3 W – 0 L record is that they finished the tournament without facing a single tough opponent.

The teams they defeated were HEET, Team Falcons, and BIG. The first two of these teams ended up being eliminated while the third needed five matches to qualify for the IEM Rio Major.

OG finished with a record of 3 W – 1 L and qualified for their first CS:GO Major. This was a well-deserved result and it’s clear that OG have improved a lot this year thanks to the roster changes they’ve made. In particular, the signing of Abdulkhalik “degster” Gasanov was an inspired one.

Conclusions

Most of the French teams failed to qualify for the Major. In the second RMR, Falcons and HEET were among the competitors that could have joined Vitality but didn’t. In the first RMR, G2 Esports were expected to qualify with ease but were unsuccessful.

This means that French CS:GO will be represented by just one team, which constitutes a low point for this country.

Some teams, such as MOUZ and Outsiders, qualified with a record of 3 W – 2 L, but they only lost against top teams such as Na’Vi and Vitality. Meanwhile, they defeated other top teams along the way, such as Heroic and OG. This suggests that they are quite strong and should not be underestimated at IEM Rio Major.

The big event starts on October 31. The tickets have already been sold but if you want to watch it, you can do so on Twitch.tv.
