One of the most important players in the history of competitive Apex Legends, Jacob “HisWattson” McMillin, announced his imminent retirement from the competitive scene after his former team, FURIA, was eliminated from the Split 2 playoffs of the 2023 ALGS season.

This marks the end of an extremely successful career for HisWattson, who won multiple tournaments. In addition, he was also awarded the MVP of the 2022 Apex Legends Global Series Championship.

HisWattson announces his retirement from the competitive scene of Apex Legends

Through a statement on his Twitter account, HisWattson announced his imminent retirement from the Apex Legends competitive scene.

Undoubtedly, HisWattson will always be one of those players we will remember when talking about the Apex Legends competitive scene; not only for his great individual talent, which is truly remarkable but for his time with FURIA Esports in the NA scene of the ALGS.

In the 2022 season, HisWattson was one of FURIA’s mainstays in their rise in the NA Last Chance Qualifier and subsequently in the 2022 ALGS Championship. In addition, there was a lot of noise on the scene when FURIA decided to change roles in their lineup, as they removed HisWattson from IGL and placed Will “TeQ” Starck.

After this move, FURIA was one of the most dominant teams in the competitive Apex scene in NA, achieving second place in the overall leaderboard.

A terrible 2023 season for FURIA

However, the 2023 season has been different for FURIA, as they have only achieved disappointing results. After the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in the first round, they were relegated and practically in last place in the second round (#37). Afterward, HisWattson revealed that he had been thinking about leaving FURIA for a long time, as he was not having fun playing Apex Legends.

At that time, HisWattson mentioned that he was not having fun even when the team was winning. He further alleges that this lack of motivation has negatively affected his in-game performance and, as a result, his skills have “deteriorated.” However, HisWattson clarifies that he wants to return to what makes him happy, playing ranked and streaming.

On the other hand, HisWattson also mentions that he will remain in FURIA Esports, but this time as a content creator, the facet he likes the most in his career as a professional. It is also worth mentioning that the ALGS 2023 Split 2 playoffs have not yet ended, but, HisWattson makes this decision so that the organization has enough time to look for a player to replace him.

Now it remains to be seen if the organization can find a player that will fit in perfectly with Nelson “Xera” Medina and Scott “Pandxrz” Maynard, both of whom have proven alongside HisWattson that they are capable of competing against anyone in the Apex scene.

On the other hand, HisWattson’s retirement doesn’t mean that we won’t see him playing again; quite the contrary. Indeed, he will no longer be on the ALGS servers, but we will see him practically every day playing with Seer in his streams, which are undoubtedly very entertaining.
