Gen.G, one of the top League of Legends teams in the world, has made a surprising announcement in the wake of its performance at Worlds 2023. The team has decided to drop almost its entire roster as the off-season begins, despite finishing at the top of the competition.

Despite having a star-studded roster and a great season overall, Gen.G was unable to reach the heights it had hoped for in 2023. The team only made two changes coming into the year, but it was not enough to secure a world title. After winning the LCK Spring and Summer playoffs and qualifying for both Worlds 2023 and the Mid-Season Invitational, Gen.G lost to Bilibili Gaming in the semifinals at MSI and the quarterfinals at Worlds. As the team prepares for the 2024 season, it has decided to make major changes and move on from some of its biggest stars.

Gen.G Move On From Star Players After Top Eight Finish at Worlds

South Korean esports organization Gen.G has decided not to renew the contracts of its star players Jeong “Chovy” Ji-hoon, Han “Peanut” Wang-ho, Yoo “Delight” Hwan-joong, and top laner Choi ‘Doran’ Hyeon-joon, as well as its coaching staff, all of whom had contracts expiring after Worlds 2023. The only player remaining on the team is rookie Kim “Peyz” Su-hwan, who has a contract through 2024.

The team managed to win the LCK Spring and Summer Playoffs and qualify for both Worlds 2023 and the Mid-Season Invitational. However, the team was again unable to prevail in the final stage and was defeated by Bilibili Gaming in the semi-finals of the MSI and the quarter-finals of Worlds.

All three had extended their contracts in 2022, which expired after the 2023 Worlds. The team apparently did not want to extend their contracts for another year.

The offseason starts now!

The South Korean esports organization has also parted ways with its coaching staff, whose contracts all expired after the 2023 Worlds. The only player still on the Gen.G roster at the moment is rookie Peyz, whose contract runs until 2024.

This roster change may seem extreme, but it is not uncommon in the esports world. Gen.G will now have the opportunity to pick from a pool of free agents heading into 2024.

We should certainly find out soon what the lineup for 2024 will look like. There have already been a number of roster moves in the European region, even though the offseason only officially started yesterday.

One of the wildest changes on the scene is that star player Carl Martin Erik Rekkles Larsson is joining T1s academy team and will play as support in the LCK Challengers League.
