The ESL Pro League S18 Group Stage is history, and we have G2 Esports winning, suffering a bit, Group D by beating Complexity Gaming 2-1 in the Grand Final.

Undoubtedly, we all expected G2 to take the top spot in Group D and even more so, considering Cloud9’s disappointing run in this tournament. However, COL was a much tougher opponent than we could have imagined, and they put up a good fight until the end.

As a result, G2 Esports starts their run in the ESL Pro League S18 playoffs from the Quarterfinals, while Complexity will do it from the Round of 12.

Let’s see what happened in this exciting final series between G2 and COL for first place in Group D of the ESL Pro League S18.

G2 Esports apply a reverse sweep to beat COL and win Group D

G2 Esports won Group D without losing a single series, but in this match against COL, they had to suffer a lot and, in addition, apply a reverse sweep to take the victory by 2-1. COL fought from start to finish and even came close to sweeping G2 2-0. However, the team could not withstand G2’s onslaught and lost.

The series was held at Anubis, Inferno, and Ancient.

Anubis

It all started at Anubis, Complexity’s map pick, where the North American squad surprised G2 with impressive play. In the first half, COL took a resounding 9-6 victory on their CT Side. Then, at the change of sides, G2 Esports’ defense could do nothing against COL’s offense, as they could only win 2 rounds. As a result, COL started this Grand Final with a solid 16-8 victory.

Inferno

The second map, Inferno, was an amazing give and take from the start, as COL started strong again, but, this time, G2 also displayed all their potential to even the series 1-1.

COL again started very well in the first half, and they managed to take a tight 8-7 win on their CT Side. However, at the change of sides, we had a spectacular back and forth that ended with the score 15-15; everything would be defined in Overtime.

Finally, after 5 rounds in Overtime, G2 Esports took the victory by 19-16, thus equalizing the series 1-1.

Ancient

Finally, the teams moved to Ancient, a map that was controlled from start to finish by Nikola “NiKo” Kovač, Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov, and G2 Esports. In the first half, G2 started extremely strong, and they pulled out a resounding 12-3 victory to put a blow on the table and extinguish COL’s dream of winning this series.

Finally, at the change of sides, G2 sealed their victory by winning 4 out of 5 contested rounds to take the 16-4 win and secure first place in Group D.
