On day 1 of DreamLeague S20, every team from both groups played two best-of-two matches. The results clearly demonstrate that with the exception of several teams, everyone can lose, even against opponents that are supposed to be considerably weaker.

In group A, six of the eight teams drew their first two matches. Tundra Esports are the only ones who managed to win a match in this group and they did it at Team Liquid’s expense. Seven draws out of eight matches is not what the pundits predicted before the tournament began, but it’s exactly what happened in group A on the first day.

In group B, things were a lot more chaotic. Here, there were only three draws. Some of the teams won challenging matches only to lose supposedly easier ones. The only team that finished the day with a perfect record was BetBoom Team. They had to face two tough opponents, Team Aster, and Shopify Rebellion, and proved to be very strong.

Group A results

Tundra seem to know how to defeat Western European teams. And it’s understandable. They play against them so frequently that they know almost everything about their playstyle.

But when they are faced with foreign opponents, their formula no longer works so well. We saw this in their match against Talon, who aren’t even a formidable competitor.

One team that surprised us in group A was TSM. They drew against both Team Secret and Team Spirit, even though they’re only ranked 3rd in one of the world’s weakest regions, North America.

Group B results

In group B, 9Pandas defeated Entity and then got crushed by Gaimin Gladiators, who had obtained a draw in their first match, against Shopify Rebellion.

Team Aster lost against BetBoom but defeated OG. Beastcoast proved to be hard to beat and drew twice. The first time against OG and the second time against Entity. However, given the other results obtained by these two teams, this is a bad sign for the South American squad.

Let’s not forget that only four teams per group will advance to stage 2 of DreamLeague S20. With such results against the weakest teams in the group, beastcoast cannot hope to qualify.

Rebellion started well, with a very surprising draw against Gaimin Gladiators, but then lost against BetBoom. However, given the strength of these opponents, they could easily do much better in the coming days.
