PSG.LGD’s Zhang “Faith_bian” Ruida stated a while back that he will quit Dota 2 at the end of The International 11 and officially end his esports career. And he’s not alone — Team Liquid’s Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen also plans to retire after the TI.

Recently, Faith_bian spoke again about his decision, saying that he wants to start a new chapter in his life and that regardless of the outcome, this event will be his last.

End of Faith_bian’s career

In his original announcement, coupled with a breakdown of what happened during the TI10 grand finale that LGD lost to Team Spirit, Faith_bian pointed out that it was a decision he made shortly after that event and that TI11 would be his last attempt to win the trophy again.

After a slow start at TI11, PSG.LGD failed to gain a foothold in the playoffs. They could only win one of their three series and were eventually eliminated by Team Aster. It was a lousy run through the tournament for PSG.LGD, but Faith_bian maintained a good vibe.

He explained on Weibo:

“After the TI10, I had already decided that this would be my last year on the pro Dota scene. Looking back on my entire career now, I am so happy that I had the unique experience of fighting against any opponent with my teammates by my side.”

“I’m so grateful to have had these trusted teammates throughout my career and I really appreciate the time we’ve spent together. I have no regrets this year and I’m so happy about it.”

Faith_bian’s future and possible return

How the Faith_bian will continue on his journey is not clear. He says he wants to devote himself to new adventures. However, a return isn’t entirely out of the question, although likely not in the near future.

“From 2014 to 2022, thank you for all your help and encouragement, thank you for your kindness and passion. I hope you all learned the spirit of esports through me, and I hope you all get to enjoy esports for yourself. We will definitely see each other again when it is determined!”

MATUMBAMAN will also retire

Faith_bian is not the only one retiring from Dota 2. Royal Never Give Up Lu “Somnus” Yao too hinted at his retirement last week after his team got eliminated from The International, and Team Liquid’s Lasse “MATUMBAMAN” Urpalainen also plans to hang up his mouse after the event.
