Stage 1 of DreamLeague S20 was surprisingly difficult for everyone.

Even the strongest competitors barely qualified for stage 2. Most of the results were draws, which clearly proves that the strength difference between the teams is small in most cases.

Group A results

In group A on DreamLeague S20, the top three teams that qualified finished with identical records: 1 W – 6 D – 0 L. These teams were Team Spirit, PSG.LGD, and Talon Esports.

The fact that they didn’t lose a single match out of seven is impressive. But they also only won one. This puts them in a fragile position for stage 2, which will be extremely difficult.

The fourth qualified team will be decided on June 15 in a tiebreaker. The participants will be Evil Geniuses, Team Secret, and Tundra Esports. The winner of the tiebreaker is hard to predict because Tundra Esports are playing with a stand-in.

Under normal conditions, Tundra would have qualified with ease. But since they’re playing with Stanislav “Malr1ne” Potorak instead of Leon “Nine” Kirilin, the situation is a lot more complicated. One of their adversaries will be Team Secret, who defeated them in stage 1.

For TSM and Team Liquid, the tournament is already over. In Liquid’s case, the result they got here is a complete disaster: 8th place with just 5 points and a record of 1 W – 3 D – 3 L. Let’s not forget that this is the finalist from the first two Dota Pro Circuit Majors of the season.

To make matters worse, Liquid did not compete with any stand-ins. They were simply bad at everything. Their coordination was off in most games, their drafts were questionable, and there was simply no game plan to execute in some cases. Their main goal was to survive the first 20 minutes and that’s not how you win Dota 2 games.

Group B results

In group B, beastcoast (7-7), Shopify Rebellion (6-8), OG (6-8), and Entity (3-11) got eliminated. The winners were 9Pandas (10-4), BetBoom Team (8-6), Gaimin Gladiators (8-6), and Team Aster (8-6).

This group had far fewer draws than group A but the matches were still highly disputed. For OG and Shopify, the results would have been easy to predict because they both played with stand-ins.

Meanwhile, 9Pandas, BetBoom, Gladiators, and Aster are all exceptional teams. Their results make perfect sense. In fact, it’s strange that they didn’t win more matches and lose fewer.
