Peter “Doublelift” Peng, a well-known figure in professional League of Legends, has ended his career after more than ten years in the spotlight. Known for his consistency at the top of the LCS and his time with teams such as CLG, TSM, Team Liquid and most recently 100 Thieves, Doublelift leaves a remarkable mark on the esports world.

Yesterday, December 1, 2023, he announced his decision to retire from tournaments for good in an in-depth interview. “I’m retiring, for real this time,” he said in the video.

With the promise that his retirement is permanent this time, Doublelift’s departure marks the end of an era. Previous breaks from his esports career have always been temporary, but this time it looks like he’s hanging up the mouse permanently. His analysis of TSM’s disappointing performance at Worlds in 2020 and his long career offers a glimpse into the mind of one of North America’s most recognizable ADC players.

Doublelift announces permanent retirement

Doublelift returned to esports this year after taking a break following TSM’s disappointing performance at the 2020 League of Legends World Championship.
Despite his enthusiasm for the game and the competition, he mentioned that his return to professional esports was not as profitable as he had hoped and that his career as a professional would mean financial losses compared to a streaming career. He also mentioned that the upcoming season would require even greater financial sacrifices due to the current climate in the LCS and esports in general.

Esport in crisis

Teams are reducing their spending, which he believes reduces the chances of putting together a lineup that could win the World Championship. That was always his ultimate goal as a player. Doublelift has already achieved significant success in his career, including eight LCS playoff wins and five LCS regular season victories. His best result in an international tournament was second place at the 2019 Mid-Season Invitational while playing for Team Liquid. Despite his eight qualifications for the World Championships, Doublelift has only managed to finish in the top eight once.

The player believes that his chances of winning the World Championship have diminished over time and has therefore decided to walk away from his last big goal and retire as a professional.
Doublelift is not retiring from the scene completely, however, and will continue to be on show for his fans as he will now focus full-time on streaming and content creation.
