CYCLOPS Head Coach Hibiki “XQQ” Motoyama has recently admitted that his team threw a Rainbow Six Siege match in an attempt to secure a higher seeding for the scene’s next major. In the Asia-Pacific League, it can sometimes be beneficial to lose, thus preventing a rival from collecting points. CYCLOPS threw their match against QConfirm, losing purposely so that Cloud9 would not leapfrog their opponents. Cloud9 had a chance of being ranked higher than CYCLOPS.

Why the Actions of CYCLOPS Were So Surprising

Ubisofts’s Rainbox Six Siege Esports team has rules in place to avoid such a scenario, however it is often difficult to determine exactly when such an action has been taken, with teams coming up with convincing excuses for not performing at their best. Such excuses can surround the implementation of new a new strategy, giving reserve players a chance and even personal matters away from gaming. However, XQQ is one of the few in the industry to have admitted such wrongdoing.

Breaking the news on Twitter, XQQ admitted that his team had played below par on purpose, however the post has since been deleted. While many have raised questions surrounding the points system in the region, XQQ clearly took full responsibility for his teams’ actions. It is now understood that Ubisoft will look into the issue in greater detail, with competitors Cloud9 potentially pushing for a significant punishment too, given the fact that the organization was on the wrong end of things.

What Punishment Will be Handed to CYCLOPS?

The countdown to the Six November Major has well and truly begun, with the event featuring many of the leading Rainbow Six Siege teams preparing to compete. The cash prizes on offer mean that competition for places will be fierce, with teams doing everything they can to get an edge over their opponents. However, CYCLOPS have undoubtedly taken things too far with their latest decision, with the draw of a better seeding not being enough to warrant this.

Ubisoft are yet to release any kind of statement surrounding the matter, while the APAC League have also remained silent. It would come as no surprise should CYCLOPS be banned from the upcoming major, with leading authorities within Esports currently doing everything possible to stamp out any form of cheating.
