BLAST Premier Spring Groups is quickly coming to an end. In the four groups, four surprising teams are in the Grand Final, waiting for their last opponent.

I say surprising because not a single one of the favorites managed to win two consecutive matches so far. Vitality were defeated by Astralis in group A. FaZe Clan were defeated by GamerLegion in group B. G2 Esports were defeated by Natus Vincere in group C. And Cloud9 were defeated by Virtus.pro in group D.

It’s quite amazing that so many upsets occurred in a single tournament and in the span of just two rounds. To be fair, in every single case, the team that qualified for the Grand Final first was the second-best in the group. So despite the numerous upsets, at least we haven’t seen completely ridiculous upsets.

Impressions

It seems that Astralis is quickly becoming a formidable team. After signing both jabbi and stavn, the Danes started to gain momentum and we can now see the results. Winning against the Paris Major champions is quite challenging. Especially when they’ve also won the last several tournaments in CS2 and one of their players is the best in the world.

When you play against ZywOo, you’re playing against 5.5 or even 6 players, not just a regular team of 5. Even in defeat, ZywOo was by far the best player on the server, while the second-best was Spinx. The reason why Vitality lost was that flameZ, apEX, and mezii had abysmal performances.

In the case of Team Liquid, we can’t really say that they’ve been truly tested because FaZe Clan lost before they could encounter them. But it was still impressive to watch them win against Team Spirit and GamerLegion.

It seems that Twistzz and cadiaN have already started to work their magic and are on their way to transforming Team Liquid completely. Don’t forget that around five years ago, Liquid was one of the world’s best competitors in Counter-Strike. Can they get back to that level, now that they have a world-class IGL and an extra world-class rifler? We’ll have to wait and see.

Another team that has impressed so far is Natus Vincere. Despite competing without s1mple, Na’Vi are playing well. It seems that b1t and iM are starting to cooperate much better, and their natural rifling skills are enough to carry the team to a lot of important round wins.
