Originally developed for pilots, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 has also established itself with gamers. The second generation of this headset is now available.

We reveal how the MMX 300 performs in the test and what points of criticism we found, as well as all the advantages that the wired and closed headset has to offer.

Beyerdynamic MMX 300 in review

Let’s now turn to the question of how the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 performed in the test and in which areas this second generation scored particularly well. A headset test is about the general equipment and the design, but also about the sound, the wearing comfort and the microphone. Finally, we also rate the setup and compatibility as well as the battery life for Bluetooth headsets, which is not the case with the MMX 300.

Furnishing

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 headset comes with a matt black finish and thus radiates a clear understatement. The scope of delivery also includes a transport bag with a zipper, which is also in black. The pouch with the headset can even be conveniently attached to a backpack or belt using the loop.

Two cables are also included in the scope of delivery. The first Y-cable provides two stereo mini-jack plugs. This means that headphones and microphones can be connected separately to the PC if required. The other cable has a 4-pin mini-jack plug, which is intended for combined inputs. This cable also has a wired remote control that can be used to control the microphone or the volume. Both cables are only 1.25 meters long, so a small minus point in terms of comfort.

Design

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 really doesn’t look like a “real” gaming headset – but does it have to? Gaming headsets often seem a bit playful and this is exactly where the MMX 300 comes in and serves exactly the other target group. The background, however, is that it was originally a headset designed for pilots and air traffic. The headset is also used in the studio, which is why it does not serve any typical gamer aspects from a purely visual point of view. However, it still looks professional, so the focus can be on the sound experience.

By the way: In keeping with the design, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 also impresses in terms of robustness. The central elements are well-screwed and maintenance-friendly and there is a kink protection at all critical points. In addition, a metal bracket ensures that the suspension of the earpieces is stable.

Sound

Depending on the application, the sound can of course be viewed from very different perspectives. The headset can keep up almost everywhere, although a dedicated sound card or a professional amplifier would be recommended depending on the situation.

If we look at the pure sound, the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 outshines many products. The whole thing applies equally to the stage, bass strength, reproduction of voices and dynamics. Especially dialogue-heavy scenes are presented very clearly, even the finest nuances in pitch are audible. Ambient noise, for example in an open-world environment, can also be easily localized.

The three-dimensionality is remarkable for action scenes. There could be a bit more bass in boss fights. The smallest effects, be it rustling leaves, are reproduced deeply and meaningfully.

The only points of criticism: If we had to criticize (and at a fairly high level) then we would have to mention the low restraint in the bass range or the missing noise suppression function. The headset is very well isolated, but ambient noise can still be heard.

Wearing comfort

The Beyerdynamic MMX 300 are soft and comfortable on the head. The over-ear headphones enclose the ears and even the higher weight of 332 grams (including cable and microphone) is hardly noticeable thanks to the even weight distribution.

Microphone

We have nothing to complain about when it comes to the microphone. What the headset achieves in terms of sound is also reflected in the microphone. The voice is reproduced extraordinarily precisely and therefore very authentically. This ensures the best possible understanding. Again, the only point of criticism is regarding the ambient noise. They are suppressed, but not completely hidden.

Furnishings

Since the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 is a wireless headset, setting it up shouldn’t be difficult for anyone. Plug in the 3.5mm jack cable and get started. The motto is “Plug & Play”. There is no software to download or drivers to update. Refreshingly simple!

There is also a small extra feature for control in the form of a cable remote control, which can be used to adjust the volume or mute the microphone, among other things.

Compatibility

Unfortunately, Mac users have to switch to a different model for the Beyerdynamic MMX 300, since the operating system is unfortunately not officially supported. According to the manufacturer, it is optimized for PC, Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch.

Conclusion on the analogue Beyerdynamic MMX 300

Although the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 is a wired headset and it doesn’t look like a typical gaming headset, the results are all the more impressive. Without any technical frills, the analogue headset offers spatial reproduction, the finest sound nuances and a crisp, if not overly strong, bass. Active noise cancellation isn’t offered, but the headset is well-insulated and noise is usually sufficiently suppressed.

Advantages

  • three-dimensional sound and high-frequency range (5 Hz to 35 kHz)
  • explicitly not a typical gaming design (can of course also be seen as a disadvantage)
  • easy operation and installation through the cable
  • extremely good sound quality, especially vocally and in the richness of detail
  • precise and authentic voice reproduction and thus the best possible intelligibility
  • skin-friendly material
  • Cover of the headband and the ear pads is exchangeable (Velcro fastener)
  • The gooseneck of the microphone can be adjusted individually and precisely

Disadvantages

  • not optimized for Mac
  • no noise suppression, but “only” strong isolation
  • slightly weaker in the bass range
  • Hardly any adjustment options (but can also be seen as a clear advantage)
  • only with 3.5 mm jack (connection option must be available)
