BetBoom Esports came very close to losing their direct invite to The International 12 after failing to finish the Bali Major in the top eight. The CIS squad won the first round of the upper bracket only to find out later that they had received a default loss because one of their players broke the rules.

In the lower bracket, BetBoom were defeated in the first round by Azure Ray and failed to score any points. Two teams were very close to them in the DPC rankings: Team Aster and Quest Esports.

Aster had an excellent opportunity to score points at this tournament because they finished the group stage in the top four and then started the playoffs in the upper bracket. Just one victory in the first two matches would have been enough. But they lost both matches, first against Quest Esports and then against 9Pandas.

This meant that the only threat left for BetBoom was Quest. However, in order for this team to surpass the CIS competitor in the DPC rankings, a top-two result was needed.

Quest’s run at the Bali Major

Quest Esports started the Bali Major with incredible results: 5 W – 2 D – 0 L in the first seven matches.

The 8th match of the group stage was lost against PSG.LGD, but the team led by Oleh “kaori” Medvedok still won group B, which was considered to be much stronger than group A because it features competitors like BetBoom, Gaimin Gladiators, PSG.LGD, 9Pandas, Azure Ray, Evil Geniuses, and Bleed Esports.

Many of these teams are the best in their respective regions. With such strong group opponents, Quest were expected to get eliminated very quickly. But instead, they proved to be a very good team.

In the playoffs of the Bali Major, Quest defeated Aster (2-1) and then got defeated by Gaimin Gladiators (1-2), the team that won the first two DPC Majors and will compete in the Grand Final of this one as well.

In the lower bracket, Quest won against PSG.LGD, the team that had defeated them in the group stage, but then they ran into the second competitor that will play in the Grand Final of the Bali Major, Team Liquid. This match proved to be much harder and Quest eventually lost.

The final score was 2-1 in favor of Liquid and all three games were quite long: 57, 43, and 48 minutes.
