In Dota 2 patch 7.35b, many of the most successful heroes are supports, midlaners, or offlaners. There are very few carry heroes that have a win rate above 52%. Wraith King is one of them, and playing him well will help you gain a lot of MMR.

Despite the nerfs he received in Dota 2 patch 7.35, WK remains a stable carry hero that can accomplish a wide range of tasks. The longer the game goes, the stronger he becomes thanks to his ultimate and other abilities.

Why Wraith King is so powerful in this meta

One of the worst ways to lose a Dota 2 game is by losing your carry at the start of the fight and then not being able to immediately buy back due to a lack of gold. When you play Wraith King, you almost always have a second life.

This built-in Aegis allows you to play the carry role like a tank. You can just jump in, stun a target, and then start to hit it without worrying about enemy ultimates and dying.

Reincarnation also gives you the option to play a glass-cannon build without really feeling like a glass-cannon. One hidden benefit of this ability is the massive slows it applies in a 900 radius when you get killed for the first time. Enemies will essentially be locked in place because of the 75% movement slow they will suffer, which allows your teammates to get a favorable trade.

The two abilities that make WK a strong laner and jungler are Vampiric Spirit and Mortal Strike. The first of these abilities provides 20 – 50% life steal and 2 – 8 skeletons that have a lot of damage, while the second one gives you 50 – 200% bonus damage every 5.5 – 4s.

So if you attack for 4s, you get to deal the equivalent of four additional attacks thanks to your two crits.

WK’s weakest ability is Wraithfire Blast, but it too will stun enemies for 1.6s and deal 280 damage, which isn’t that bad. Plus it will slow movement speed by 20% for 2s and give your skeletons a 2s buff: +25 movement speed and +25 attack speed.

When you buy items on this hero, make sure you add a Blink Dagger, an Armlet, and some heavier damage-dealing items such as Desolator. Armor and a BKB also work well on this hero, but it’s ultimately up to you to prioritize what you think would help the most.

In some cases, your team will have plenty of damage, so you’ll be able to choose a tankier build. But if it lacks damage, make sure you do your part because you are the carry. Without enough damage, enemies will simply kite and ignore you in team fights.
