The first day of Bali Major’s playoffs stage ended with zero upsets.

Some might regard Team Liquid’s victory against PSG.LGD to be an upset but it wasn’t. Liquid might have played poorly at DreamLeague S20 but in every other tournament they competed in this season they did a great job. Furthermore, they won group A of the Major with a record of 4 W – 4 D – 0 L.

In the other three matches that were played on day 1 of the playoffs, BetBoom Team, Gaimin Gladiators, and Quest Esports struggled to win against their opponents but in the end they were successful.

Team Liquid vs. PSG.LGD: 2 – 1

Liquid lost game 2 against Broodmother but won the other two using heroes like Morphling, Bloodseeker, Ember Spirit, and Storm Spirit. They seem to favor a combination of strong late game and high mobility. Strangely enough, they also picked Pudge in game 1.

BetBoom vs. Tundra: 2 – 0

By far, the most exciting game of the day occurred in the match between BetBoom and Tundra Esports. It lasted 104 minutes and had epic networth swings. At one point, BetBoom were 15.000 gold ahead. Then came Tundra’s turn to be 20.000 and even 40.000 gold ahead.

But because of the long duration, everyone was six-slotted, so it didn’t really matter. The fate of the game was decided in epic team fights. What made this game very fun to watch was the fact that BetBoom had to win against mega creeps and the stakes were high for them.

They needed a victory to secure a top eight spot at the Bali Major and a direct invite to The International 12. And they got it. Needless to say, their joy was immense.

Beastcoast vs. Gaimin Gladiators: 1 – 2

Gladiators lost game 1 against a Meepo and then abused an old-school strategy: IO plus Leshrac. They simply destroyed beastcoast with it and ended the game in around half an hour each time. We rarely see such strategies being used twice but Gladiators looked very confident.

Quest Esports vs. Aster: 2 – 1

Quest Esports came very close to losing against Aster. Despite winning game 1 with ease, they lost game 2 in less than 30 minutes and had a 9000 gold disadvantage in game 3. The only reason why they won this game was a successful smoke gank that resulted in the death of Aster’s Bloodseeker and IO.

What was truly bizarre about this game was Ammar “ATF” Al-Assaf’s decision to play Slark.
