Thrown into an unfortunate 1v2 against the mighty fnatic on Cache, s1mple was probably with one of the worst guns you could have for that potential retake: an AWP. But how could fnatic possibly prepare for the madness they were about to witness?

Prologue

Prompting one of the most iconic commentaries of CS:GO history, s1mple’s magical noscopes is a gift that keeps on giving, keeps on mesmerizing us. It was 2016, and Team Liquid were one of the strongest teams in the world on paper. Going into ESL One Cologne 2016, the second Major of the year, Team Liquid were determined to win it and bring glory to the doomed NA region.

After a rocky Group Stage where they lost to Virtus Pro, the American team faced Columbus’ Major finalists, NaVi. Though they lost the first map, Team Liquid gathered themselves back together and put in solid performances to win the next two and book a spot in the semifinals against the legendary fnatic.

Team Liquid won their map pick of Cobblestone, and Cache was the next map. After racing into a 9-4 lead, Liquid threw away a 3v2 lead. fnatic worked hard and smart to make it 1v2. But the last guy was Aleksandr Kostyliev.

The Play

Like the god he is, s1mple was in Heaven on Cache with an AWP, jumping about trying to look for some info. A moment later, he decides to drop off and while he does it, he spots dennis and noscopes him mid-air. But dennis did not convey the info to KRIMZ that s1mple had dropped down from Heaven, so when the Viking peeked, he aimed Heaven and not the ground, where s1mple really was.

That gave enough time for s1mple to scope in and comfortably kill KRIMZ. But nope. s1mple went with another noscope onto a guy that was a whole room apart, and for absolutely no reason, he had created one of the most iconic CS:GO moments in the history of the game.

s1mple noscoped KRIMZ from across a room in the 14th round of a Major’s semifinal. You simply cannot write a script like that.

The Aftermath

s1mple had done the impossible and Team Liquid took a comfortable 11-4 first-half lead on Cache. They soon went on to close out the map and win the semifinal 2-0. s1mple’s 1.32 rating heroics had gifted the NA region a Grand Final appearance, a height that was never reached by the NA scene. But that would be the furthest they would go, as coldzera and co. came back to beat them again.

coldzera had broken Team Liquid’s mentality in the previous Major by inspiring a legendary comeback with his incredible Flying AWP 4k on Mirage. After putting in strong performances all Major, their Brazilian ghosts came back to haunt them again, as Team Liquid faltered at the biggest occasion, losing 16-7 and 16-6 to SK Gaming. The NA-SA matchup had gone South America’s way again, and Liquid evaporated, as s1mple decided to return back home.

The Legend

When asked why he noscoped KRIMZ when he had the time to scope in and get a comfortable shot, all s1mple said was that he “felt that the shot would land.” If that is not the definition of Godliness, then I don’t know what is. To commemorate this legendary piece of history, s1mple earned a precious graffiti on Cache.

s1mple graffiti 1

An angel, descending from the Heavens with an AWP without a scope. The beauty of this art challenges olofmeister’s Overpass graffiti: an angel defusing a bomb in flames. How crucial this play was, and what it led to for the NA scene is recognized by s1mple, and to have a permanent reminder of his grand 6-month stint in America and of course, a permanent reminder of the greatest CS:GO play ever, s1mple got the graffiti tattooed, just like coldzera did his.

The immortality this CS:GO God achieved will always be ingrained in our memories, best described by Bardolph’s amazing casting. “What is this clutch from s1mple. Are you serious? You can’t do that.” “That’s not allowed! This is not FPL, this is a Major!”
