PUBG to Run at 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X

We finally have official confirmation: PUBG will be playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S from day one! This is great news for the many Battle Royale purists across the globe. PUBG isn’t all that popular these days (at least not in the West), but it’s still a heck of a good time.

Furthermore, if you already own the game on either current-gen system (that being PlayStation 4 or Xbox One), you’ll be able to transfer your account and continue playing free of charge. All of your progress and in-game cosmetics will carry over, as expected. We’re also getting cross-gen cross-platform play (that’s a mouthful). In other words, current-gen and next-gen console players will all compete on the same server. This is great news as it’ll undoubtedly shorten queue times.

PUBG Next-Gen Performance (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X & S)

When it comes to performance and frame rates, the Series X will leverage the Xbox One X build. This means it’ll run at 60 FPS if you select the “Framerate Priority Option” in the settings. PUBG Corporation is touting “extremely smooth and stable” game performance with “faster loading and little to no frame drops.” While this certainly sounds like classic marketing spiel, it stands to reason given what these consoles are packing.

PlayStation 5 owners will also be able to enjoy the OG Battle Royale at 60 FPS from day one. As for the Xbox Series S, however, it’ll be restricted to the Xbox One S build of the game which means it’ll run at a meager 30 FPS for the time being. That, in short, is quite a bummer. We know the Series S is far stronger than the One X, and is more than powerful to run games at 1440p and 120 FPS. Fortunately, PUBG Corporation is working on an option to raise the framerate cap in the future, although there’s still no concrete date in regards to when that could happen.

Closing Remarks

Overall, these are exciting times for PUBG fans and those who are looking to game on next-generation consoles. Still, the fact that we’re not getting higher framerates upon release is somewhat of a letdown. Heck, maybe that’s even an understatement. We know these consoles are more than powerful enough to run PUBG at well over 100 FPS. Those who’ve been looking for a bit of that next-gen goodness will be left wanting. 60 FPS at High settings can currently be obtained on a mid-tier graphics card. So, frankly, we’re not getting any of those “next-gen gains.” On the contrary.

Still, a boost in performance is always highly welcome. Even more so if it comes without a price tag attached to it.
