EG Boostio, the IGL of Evil Geniuses, is making headlines with his bold claim. Recently, he appeared in an esports podcast, Hotline League, where Travis Gafford was the host. During the podcast, he said, “China will never be better than NA in Valorant”. Adding further he said that North American teams will ensure the gap will maintain in the future.

The Evil Geniuses recently finished as runner-up in the VCT Masters Tokyo. Despite not being on the list of event favorites they surprised everyone with their performance. Especially they were the team who eliminated all top seeds from each region.

EG Boostio: “We will make sure these Chinese teams will never be close to us”

He further went on to say that he is telling a hundred percent fact. They (North American teams) will keep on grinding and will ensure that the gap between the Chinese and North American teams will keep intact. He believes since Chinese teams are already three years behind it will ready hard for them to catch up with the pace.

However, he also told that this is not applicable to Korean or any other Asian teams. Asian teams have much more potential to deal with the damage.

Interestingly, Boostio’s statement came on the same day as Valorant officially release in China after a wait of three years.

As we are compiling this story, Valorant China has recently concluded with VCT 2023 China Qualifiers upper final where EDward Gaming defeated BilliBilli Gaming 3-0 to advance into the grand finals.

Nonetheless, Both EDward and BilliBilli have already qualified for VALORANT Champions 2023 in Los Angeles. With one spot more to go, the battle between FunPlus Pheionx and TYLOO is expected to be more intense.

Weighting Boostio claim: A neutral perspective

In weighing Boostio’s statement, I find that it depends on various factors, to be honest. Boostio is correct in highlighting that China is currently three years behind in Valorant esports, leaving significant room for improvement.

However, it is important not to dismiss this situation as a permanent state. The recent VCT Masters held in Tokyo provided us with a glimpse of the potential of Chinese teams, despite it being their first international tournament. Particularly noteworthy was the performance of EDward Gaming and their star player, Zheng “ZmjjKK” Yongkang, which took everyone by surprise.

While there may have been some lack of experience, the skill level displayed, particularly in terms of aim, was on par with other top teams.

This reminds us of a situation where there were times when North American teams were much more dominant and many used to believe the Korean region one year gap will keep them forever away from NA teams reach. However, tables were eventually turned with team big Korean powerhouses such as T1 and Gen.G.

In the end, everyone is eyeing Valorant Champions 2023 which is scheduled to start from August 6 to all up to August 26. This time three teams from China will up against the world’s best to prove themselves. Considering the performance of EDward gaming, no teams are going to take the clash lightly.
