This is going to be a very exciting region to watch in 2023. The competition starts on January 10 and for almost three weeks, some of the best teams from The International 11 will fight for the two available Major spots reserved for this region.

A lot has changed since the end of TI11. Teams who weren’t even here decided to move to the region. Examples include Evil Geniuses and Alliance.LATAM. And lots of roster changes occurred in the past few months.

As was expected, EG got some of the best players for its own Dota 2 team. But some of the other organizations also signed great players and will certainly give them a hard time.

SA Division I Participants

The teams that will take part in Division I are these:

  • Thunder Awaken
  • Beastcoast
  • Evil Geniuses
  • Wolf Team
  • LATAM
  • Infamous
  • Infinity
  • Ravens

The first thing to keep in mind when watching SA Dota in 2023 is that many of these teams are no longer the ones from last season. Thunder Awaken and beastcoast were very impressive at The International 11, finishing in the top eight. But many of their players have changed.

Given that the new rosters differ considerably from the old ones, it’s risky to assume that they will play the same as they did in 2022.

Favorite teams

The favorites in the region are Evil Geniuses and beastcoast. Both teams have really strong players who demonstrated exceptional skills and the determination to be successful.

In South America, people are naturally hungry for victory because they don’t have much else. All they do all day is train. That’s one of the reasons why EG chose to abandon North America and move here.

In North America, they were paying huge sums of money and the results were non-existent. Here, the salaries are probably much smaller and motivation is not an issue because there’s almost nothing else to do all day. When you have no money to spend, you need to do something else with your time.

Two of the former Thunder Awaken players, Gonzalo “DarkMago” Herrera and Rafael “Sacred” Yonatan, moved to beastcoast. The other three players moved to Evil Geniuses. EG’s roster was completed by two legends of SA Dota, who transferred directly from beastcoast: Jean “Chris Luck” Salazar and Adrian “Wisper” Dobles.

Thanks to their vast experience, EG are likely to win Tour 1 in South America and start their new journey with a great success. But it will not be easy because the region features several other strong teams.
