The LCS Spring Split 2023 is not over yet, and we have to say that the teams that are no longer alive are thinking about what the next Summer Split will be. Team Liquid, one of the most iconic teams in the North American region, has decided to terminate the contract of its Head Coach, Jang “MaRin” Gyeong-hwan.

Undoubtedly, this move comes after Team Liquid had one of the worst splits in recent years. Recall that Team Liquid had a spectacular squad in 2021 that remained in the TOP 2 throughout the season. However, now with the team’s bad results, they have begun a restructuring, and the first sacrifice is MaRin.

Team Liquid announces the departure of MaRin as Head Coach of the team

On April 7, Team Liquid announced the departure of MaRin as its Head Coach of League of Legends on its Twitter account.

According to the team’s official statement, MaRin’s departure was on very good terms and came by mutual agreement. Finally, the organization claims that the coach has had some personal problems, and, in addition, they point out “divergent opinions” as causes for the departure.

The relationship between MaRin and Team Liquid lasts less than six months

In the offseason at the end of 2022, Team Liquid announced hiring MaRin to lead a lineup of Korean players. This was the South Korean’s first foray as a coach, but there is no doubt that he had all the experience to take on the role.

MaRin was, along with Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok, one of the cornerstones of the SK Telecom T1 team that won Worlds 2015. His experience led him to be considered by Team Liquid for the role of Head Coach, and, in addition, his arrival was mainly to boost the level of Park “Summit” Woo-tae, the current Top Laner of the team.

However, this relationship between MaRin and Team Liquid did not last even six months, as the team did not perform well in the LCS Spring Split and was left out of the playoffs. In the regular spring season, Team Liquid finished with a record of 8-10 to remain stuck in eighth place out of ten teams.

Team Liquid underperforms early in the Split

Team Liquid’s debacle in this Split was due to their slow start to the season. The team had an extremely sluggish start, winning only three games out of the first nine they played. However, they tried to recover in the second half of the season and had a 5-4 record. Unfortunately, in the end, this was not enough for them to advance to the playoffs.

For now, Team Liquid has not yet announced who will be MaRin’s replacement as Head Coach of the team. On the other hand, the organization still has enough time to solve this issue, as the LCS Summer Split will start on June 1, 2023.
