Red Bull League of Its Own 2023: Only G2 was able to defeat T1

The Red Bull League of Its Own 2023 came to an end on Saturday evening with a win for G2 against T1 at the Velodrom Berlin! The showcase event saw BIG, NNO, Karmine Corp, Team Heretics and G2 take on our reigning World Champions T1!

Red Bull managed to put on an event that the European League community loved. Around 7000 people were in the arena and almost 500,000 spectators in the Peak watched the match between KCorp and T1.

While T1’s draft was restricted by the so-called “Fearless Draft” in the matches against the first teams, such as BIG and NNO, they were allowed to pick all champions again against G2. Of course, NNO in particular was very grateful for the day, which was a dream come true for the players! We have summarized the event for you here.

G2 defeats T1 in the final match

G2 got a little payback on Saturday for their brief Worlds appearance where they didn’t get the chance to face T1. They were able to make up for that matchup thanks to Red Bull.

T1 were not allowed to pick the champions that had already been played in any of their matches, except against G2. That’s why we as spectators saw a little change from the typical meta picks, because T1 had to save their best champions for the last match with Fearless Draft against Team Heretics.

As a result, we saw top laner Choi “Zeus” Woo-je on AD carries several times and jungler Mun “Oner” Hyeon-jun also made for entertaining games with unconventional picks! You could definitely see that T1 also had fun in the matches and didn’t play too tryhard.

A nice picture was created in the game against NNO, because T1 only picked champions who had a T1 skin. A nice picture was created when all the players gathered briefly in the mid lane and spammed T1 emotes. Frederik “NoWay” Hinteregger from NNO had some wonderful final words in the interview afterwards.

Even though it was initially said that T1 had no mercy no matter who they played, you could tell that they didn’t take the games too seriously.

In the last match against G2, T1 had already played a few games and you could see in the players’ faces that they were tired. Of course, that played into G2’s hands, but the players also really shone. Martin “Yike” Sundelin was 17/1/11 with his Bel’Veth and even gapped Oner in this game. That definitely helped his mentality, as he wasn’t happy with his own performance at Worlds.

KCorp fans boo Faker

Unfortunately, there was a small controversy at the event, as a few fans from the KCorp block booed when GOAT Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok was answering a question on stage. Fabian “Sheepy” Mallant, head coach of the Unicorns of Love, tweeted that he was very disappointed with the KCorp fans who, in his opinion, did not give Faker the respect he deserved.

Org owner Kamel “Kameto” Kebir responded by tweeting that it was a few over-passionate fans who were stopped by the rest of the KCorp fans and that he thought it was ridiculous that such a big deal was being made of it.

Red Bull League of Its Own 2024 in Paris

Aside from this little unpleasant incident, there was also a happy announcement, as the Red Bull League of Its Own will return next year! The event will take place in Paris on December 15, 2024. It’s not yet clear which teams will be there, but G2 have already tweeted that they’ll be there no matter what!

This is good news for the community, because this is exactly the kind of offseason event we need in League, where it’s not just about blunt competition, but about different communities coming together.
