Benedict “Benkai” Tan, Paper Rex’s iconic in-game leader, is a restricted free agent ahead of the 2024 VCT (Valorant Champions Tour) season.

Paper Rex’s long-time player and in-game leader, Benedict “Benkai” Tan, is set to explore new horizons as a restricted free agent for the 2024 VCT (Valorant Champions Tour) season. This announcement signifies the end of an era for Paper Rex, of which Benkai was an integral part for almost three years.

Benkai’s journey with Paper Rex began in June 2020 when the organization was still competing in Counter-Strike. Alongside notable players like Khalish “d4v41” Rusyaidee and Alexandre “alecks” Sallé, Benkai helped shape the team’s identity as they transitioned to Valorant in February 2021.

While the move to Riot’s first-person shooter may have been later than some, it proved to be a game-changer. Paper Rex quickly emerged as a regional powerhouse, largely due to Benkai’s contributions. They soared high in international competitions, securing impressive placements such as the grand finals of VALORANT Masters Copenhagen, a solid fourth position at VALORANT Masters Reykjavík, and clinching the crown at the VCT Pacific League.

Benkai, known not just for his gameplay but also his vibrant personality, became a fan favorite. His memorable walkouts at international events and endearing moments within the VALORANT community made him more than just a player. The 2023 season brought changes, with Paper Rex signing rising star Ilia “something” Petrov and subsequently moving Benkai to the bench during the VCT Pacific League. However, Benkai continued to make an impact, even providing game breakdowns through a player’s lens at VALORANT Masters Tokyo.

PRX and Benkai’s next chapter

As Paper Rex anticipates the commencement of the 2024 VCT season, they find themselves confronted with a set of challenges and prospects. The departure of two pivotal figures, namely Benkai and Jinggg, presents a notable void that necessitates replenishment. The organization is actively engaged in the process of scouting and recruiting new talent, diligently searching the esports landscape for promising individuals.

The global esports community keenly observes Paper Rex, curious to witness their adaptation to these substantial transformations. The question at hand pertains to their ability to sustain their competitive excellence in the face of these formidable adjustments.

The esports community is abuzz with the news of Benkai’s departure. As a seasoned in-game leader with a devoted following, he is poised to attract substantial interest from various organizations. Whether he’s leading a new team to victory or entertaining fans with his antics on the international stage, one thing is certain: Benkai’s presence in Valorant esports won’t go unnoticed.
